Spare tire cover, necessary or just for looks?
Will the use of one of these prolong the life of the spare by keeping it from being exposed to the elements, or is this merely something for looks?

Looks. Tires are built to be exposed

I have the cover, but only because I got it free. Used it this past winter but now it's sitting in the basement. Rig looks better without it.

think for a second.
what about the other four tires?
they don't seem to fall apart by being exposed to the elements.
what makes the spare so special?
if you actually have a spare with the same kind of wheel and tire, you can rotate all five tires and not worry about 'wasting' the spare.

Definitely for looks. BAD looks.
If you're doing a five tire rotation when you rotate, the spare will get just as much time on the ground as it will on the back of the FJ.

I had mine for about 3 weeks, then sold it. The traction and lettering are a PITA to clean when washing the vehicle. Cya! Sold it to a city dweller.

That's a moot point since the other four tires are in constant use, you want the spare to be in optimal condition for emergencies. That's why it's special.
Good point with the rotation of all five tires though. I like the look of the fj with out a spare tire cover so only if it was really necessary would I throw cash down for it.

Go to your local militqry surplus store and check out the camo backpack covers. They fit perfectly over the stock spare, and cost arount $9.00. Mine is desert camo.
