Protecting the FJ's cargo area from scratches

Like some of you, I need to occasionally haul equipment in the back of the FJ. I only did it once before I realized what a mistake that was. Even though everything was in cases, I had scratches all over the plastic surfaces of the seat backs, the transition ramp and the fender wells. I had hauled this same equipment in a Trooper for 5 years without this damage.

So I went in search of a cargo mat for the FJ. I finally found a 4x8 rubber mat at AutoBarn.com for $59.95 (BLTCM84).

I wrap the mat up over the folded seat bottoms (between them and the front seatbacks) to protect them and then it runs down the folded seat backs, and all the way to the rear opening, leaving about 16" extra to protect the bumper area during loading. I trimmed the sides with a razor blade where it meets the wheel wells, so I get about 4" running up the inside of the wheel wells.

Once everything is loaded, I lift up the extra 16" and shut the rear door. That extra 16" protects the back door from anything that might slide into the rear door. When I don't need it, it stays rolled up in the garage. It only takes 5 minutes to throw it in there, and things actually slide easier on this mat then they do the FJ's plastic. It's also easier to get things up and over that ramp joining the cargo area to the folded seat backs.

Re: Protecting the FJ's cargo area from scratches

My cargo area is totally scratched up from hauling my bike around. Doesn't bother me though, it is the cargo area and scratches back there don't bother me none. The scratches on my doors from wheeling are starting to bug me though.

I find the fact that the mat keeping things from sliding around is worth using it, even if you don't mind scratches...

Re: Protecting the FJ's cargo area from scratches

Sweet idea. My dog has really broken in the cargo area so I'm no longer too concerned with scratching it.

I used to think I should keep it as scratch free as possible, but then I remembered that vehicles are a bad investment (because they aren't an investment) and that I bought my FJ for me, not for the guy that buys it from me in a million years. That's right, I'm keeping it. So Artoo owns the back and he can get slobber and hair all over if he wants.

Yea, I guess the sliding part goes get annoying. My subaru outback came with a nice rubber cargo mat standard...but then again it also came with a passenger armrest standard.

Got a small mover's pad from Harbor Freight, primarily for the dog as he couldn't get much traction on the plastic. Works good to protect the floor too and only cost about $5.00...my $.02

Re: Protecting the FJ's cargo area from scratches

i have the rubber FJ cargo liner, and i usually throw down a moving blanket if i have anything, even a box. the plastic is like a cheese grater to everything, and everything sticks to it, luckely it cleans up nicely.

Nah, I was just there for the day...I'm over at Hickam. Huge waves that day...almost died....I think I was the only one out there stupid enough to try to surf with a longboard.

Seems that the plastics Toyota is using now is geared more towards the ability to be recycled later on rather than durability and longevity.
