Been thinking of making these out of 18ga aluminum. This is a very easy material to cut and bend, and everybody here could make them.
As you can see it's a retro nod to the FJ40. You'll also recognize these panels on Jeeps as well.
You gotta paint the bumper black as shown or else it's just too much silver.
I'm getting a rear bumper as soon as Expedition One has it. You guys think I should try this idea out? Who can suggest an adhesive or other fastening method?
I would love to see some trail armor for the FJ and hopefully the aftermarket industries will come up with something soon. Fabbing it yourself is a great idea if you can pull it of... only problem i can see is that if 18ga aluminum is easily bent and cut then it wont make for very sturdy armor. The point of armor on the corners is to protect your rig out on the trail, and if its just gonna give way and dent the body panels underneath ther's no point in adding extra weight.
To see how they're mounted i guess you could look at the poison spyder customs website (i think they make some nasty ones for the jeep) and see what they say about installing their corner guards.
Also i remember hearing that some people have problems with water getting in between the armor and the body and not getting out and causing rust.
I'd be interested to see where this idea goes and if anybody else on this board has any ideas or interest in getting or building corner guards for the FJC...
As you may (or may not) know, the fj40 diamond corners were just sheet metal screwed into the body. I suspect you won't be doing that. Or ate least, maybe you could devise something nicer?
The 40 panels were easy, as it was one set radius curve. The FJC will require two bends, but really, it shouldn't be that tough. I thought about the same thing while looking at Fab Fours bumper -- I think aluminum would be a better choice than a rigid hunk of steel welded to the bumper.
I suspect it'll take some work, but if you just replaced the plastic with the aluminum, you should be set. make a template of the top edge, and follow those bends.

Mostly covering up rust holes that your dog could climb thru

AKA Rust multipliers for FJ40's as well.
For the FJC probably better off looking at some of the printed vinyl wrap you can buy. There is a cool looking diamond plate that until you get real close or touch it you can not tell its basically a sticker.

You should be able to be quite creative and bend up something that maybe useful. I had mine off when I installed the hitch and it has a considerable amount of room behind it. Take a look at the pics here and here for what's underneath. Notice the small vent on the bottom.
