Installing Tire-Mount Blitz Can Holder

I recently purchased a Blitz jerry can (pn 31710) and storage rack (pn G8007) and tire-mount carrier adapter (pn G81) from offroadrecovery.com.
This setup allows one to securely mount a jerry can to the rear tire, by extending the adapter plate from behind the mounted spare tire.

The only problem was that FJs have a thick, semicircular metal tab that extends into the area occupied by the wheel's central cover, making installation of the adapter plate impossible.

Before giving up and returning the gear, I started looking at what function that tab served. Aside from possible providing a place totemporarily hang the tire prior to aligning the bolt holes to the three protruding mounting bolts, I couldn'tdiscern any real purpose for it.

So: out comes the trusty angle grinder! (I tried hacksaws first, but if we weren't meant to use power tools, god wouldn't have invented electricity, I figure). So, very quickly (less than a minute), I had removed the tab and ground down the remaining bits of meta. Voila!

I was able to mount the adapter plate, can carrier, and can within a few minutes.

I'll post pics for anyone wanting to do the same. I'm pleased with the mount, and it looks high enough that it's unlikely to be damaged by anything other than being rear-ended by a big semi truck.

Pics to follow!

Re: Installing Tire-Mount Blitz Can Holder

Any concerns of too much weight on the back door. Mine seems to be dragging upon closing. I have moto metal wheels and 285-16 MTR's. I am not sure if that caused the drag or not. It could have been there from day one.

No, not really. Even full, the fuel can is a fraction of the weight of the wheel ans 285/70-17 tires mounted on it, and the fuel can doesn't stick out all that far.

Here are some pics:
The view from the back:

Side view of the mounting rack and adapter plate sticking through the wheel:

Side View:

Detail of the piece that had to be removed using an angle grinder in order to fit the adapter plate:

Total time for the mod: 25 mins.

What I did was mill out/cut a hole in the back plate, allowing the trie brase piece to come through and voila!

Re: Installing Tire-Mount Blitz Can Holder

Would anyone be able to get some pics of the entire truck w/ the can on? I really want to see what it looks like, I can't imagine always taking it on and off.
