When I break my windshield I will handle it just like I handle any other repercussion from my decisions; my choice my problem. If I need to pay out of pocket I will.
I completely expect to break (likely more than one) my windshield. It will go wonderfully with the pinstripes and stone chips on my FJ.
This is the statement that is really confusing "an apparent safety issue" since when did a broken windshield become a safety issue? I have heard of no injuries due to a windshield cracking.
Finally, I could really use clarification on your last statement.
Regarding my last statement, there are a ton of threads who have been started once owners have encountered problems with the windshield. Since you find fault with those who have voiced concern over the aparent achilles heel of the FJ (front windshields), I was jokingly revoking your option to vent once your glass needs replacement.
Your stance on windshild replacement seems awefully stoic given that you have not gone through the replacement issue YET. Having an FJ full of battle scars may be a badge of honor in your book, but for most, unobstructed glass is a safety issue.
As for my claim regarding safety, it is well known that once glass has been compromised (via chips, cracks, etc.) the windshield no longer maintains clear visibility which MAY lead to potentially hazardous injuries. See this article for further clarification:http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...te/808062.html
According to the survey conducted by the NHTSA, the average cost of using glass/platic windshields vs. conventional glass windshields is only $65.00. This survey was conducted in 1992. To me this is a small cost for increased safety and less frequent replacement. I would prefer to have the issue remedied without injury as a reason for improving the longevity of the windshild. I hope you are not suggesting that someone needs to die before this problem is fixed.
You are certainly entitled to your opinions, but a willingness to spend up to 1,700.00 for window replacement from one's pocket when there may be a solution from the manufacturer is about the sillyest thing I've read all day.
Why you would have a problem with a group of owners that seek a better FJ is beyond me. As I stated before, one day you will have to replace your windshield, when you do, hopefully it will be one that offers better protection and more durability then your current one.
If not, and you have really deep pockets, then I would suggest offering up your credit card so that FJ owners can put their deductables on your account. I'm all for being responsible for one's own actions, but sometimes products can be faulty out of the gate.
I'm sure that Ford did not intend on their Pinto's being blown up with the most minor of rear end accidents due to a poorly placed gas tank with weak walls. And NO, I'm not suggesting that the FJ's weak glass is comparable to a mal designed vehicle. My point is that manufaturing flaws are a fact of life, especially wih year-one products.
In many ways, FJ owners are real world "Beta testers" for the beloved FJC. Bashing others who are working hard to ensure the longevity of your assets and improve upon a nearly-great product is rediculous to say the least. Especially since one day this will benefit all consumers including yourself.
Nothing personal, but next time, you may want to consider thinking before you speak!

For clarification purposes I do not find fault with those who voice concern over an issue. I find fault with news reporting and sensationalizing news. I find fault with the general mentality that if something is wrong it must be some else’s responsibility. Between the news and attorneys (now I’m pissing off attorneys) there is always someone else to blame.
We all learned a long time ago cracked windshields are bad, nothing new here. Research is not required to support this, but thanks for the effort.
As your fifth paragraph states I’m certainly entitled to my opinion and as previously mentioned in thread it is my opinion. Again, in my opinion if the most money I ever loose is $1700.00 for something that brings me joy on a daily basis, I’m good with that.
As my previous post tried to clarify I have no issue with the effort, just the means.
As you so eloquently stated we are “Beta Testers” and I’m good with that. As “testers” we have opportunities and we have issues. I’m sorry you took this issue so personal and as my initial post was not intended to offend anyone. As this is a forum I simply voiced my opinion that this issue seems to be far from newsworthy in the overall scheme of thing.
Finally, as you put it “nothing personal” I would recommend reading all posts prior to replying to a single post in a thread, as a forum veteran I would have thought you would have discovered this by now.
Thank you and I will be posting nothing further in this thread.

i don't think they will get far with toyota. the xB has a similar windshield and they break a lot and toyota/scion would do nothing. it is simply part of owning a car, but i also don't remember the windshield costing $1400. the best solution is to get glass coverage from your insurance company with either a zero or very low deductible.
