installation of THULE 873 fairing and load bar...

well, good news and bad news... a long job, several hours to get it the way i want. BUT can use the existing stuff as templates! not quite done with it... i think it'll end up being a work in progress.

the overall shape came out the way i wanted. the load bar is strong and durable and will support any weight. where it is installed, i'll be able to carry planks of wood, mattresses, or anything that needs two ends, a front and a back bar to rest on... even can attach lights, eye bolts, whatever...

the down side to there set up, that damn swedish stuff is made out of that ergonomical plastic crap that isn't practicle in the real world! like the ikea furniture... i'm going to take some 1/4" x 1" aluminum bar material and make new brackets! will replace those plugs with metal nuts and bolts... aluminum and steel to be painted satin black. not sure how it is all going to hold up in las vegas 105* plus summer, especially being black. the positive to that is, they offer a lifetime warranty. i'll take off my modifications and send back the wing itself and can keep getting another for free (at least until they cut me off).

there is no noise when driving... even up to 80mph.

i wouldn't recommend going through all the hassle i did... in the long run, i'll probably end up modifying it so much, it'll be like i fabricated it myself.

here are some pictures:

good luck!

p.s. those curved ends really look better seeing them in person! at first i thought i wouldn't put them on, but the curve is nice on the factory roof rack...

Re: installation of THULE 873 fairing and load bar...

That looks great. What length load bar is that?

Just a suggestion, couldn't you install the load bar under the factory rack. The fairing adjustments should let you do that, plus it would put the load bar down under the fairing more and help with wind noise.

Looks great.

Re: installation of THULE 873 fairing and load bar...

i used the 50" bar and then ended up cutting off about two inches off each side...

yes, i guess i could install the bar underneath... didn't think of that one, but was thinking of putting it in the middle between the two tubular factory bars... the only down side is structurally... if i'm not carrying anything, having it below wouldn't be an issue... when it's on top, i think it would be stronger...

i finished making my aluminum brackets so when i'm done painting everything, i'll try reinstalling it below and see how that looks.

will post the best overall picture.

as far as wind, i get no wind noise at all from it. no increase in gas mileage...

edit: i tried putting it underneath and the fairing then lays too low... it looks awkward... i work on the painting this week and then will install with final pictures! i really want the gobi wind deflector and stealth rack, but $1500! can't do it... after i get the lift, bumper, etc, then maybe i'll revisit the thought.
