removing stock luggage rack

Has any one removed the stock luggage rack. I am having a sunroof installed and thought that I would remove it myself. I just don't want to get in over my head with something that might take some thinking. Also do I have to remove the headliner.
Thanks for the help!!!

Re: removing stock luggage rack

I took mine partially off this weekend to get the wiring in for my roof rack and all you need is a strong fore arm and a T-40 on a ratchet head. There is some water proofing material type thread locker inside to insert so pack a lunch. No reason for head liner removal to get the rack off. Good Luck! K

P.S. I will be in the Hamptons & Montauk for a fishing vacation this summer & hope to hook up with some local FJ'rs.

I was talking to Matt07FJ last weekend about removing the rack and he ran into all kinds of problems. Had to take out the headlining to get some of the bolts out. Apparently after you take out one bolt the clip that holds the nut can fall off and you can not remove the second bolt. You should PM Matt and he will tell you about the way he found to get around the clip problem.
Good luck

Re: removing stock luggage rack

I took 6 out of the twelve bolts all the way out and had no issues and then propped them up on boxes to pull my feed wires out for my roof rack wiring. K

Re: removing stock luggage rack

Thanks for the help. One of the problems is that I have a light bar with 4 lights that I have to disconnect. I hope the installer that wired the lights made it easy to disconnect them without having to cut the wires.
Thanks again
