Another sleep-in-it solution...

Took me a year to get around to it, but here's my mod for sleeping in the rear.

It aint pretty but it works great. Not really worried about aesthetics-on the way its covered in gear & when your sleeping its covered in bedding.

The basic 1/4" plywood bed was actually a sacrificial skid I made to transport a piano in the FJ. 2"X3"s level the rear section. In order to get the extra length i need for my 6'-1" height, I need to have both front seats moved all the way forward & seat backs tilted all the way forward too. I used a piano hinge and made an extendable section of platform that levels off the rear seat area and also widens out to give you the extra width available. Support for this is by a notched 2X4" that straddles the centre console- a little neporene at the contact points to protect the console. Console does not seem to be stressed at all & the weight is distributed pretty well. Outside edges are supported by two dowels, cut to have tongues that slide into the seat adjustment rails. They also bolt through the plywood base, just hand tight. Also doubled up the 1/4" ply to 1/2" thickness at the edges to stiffen that section.
Its working really well for us. Its real nice & quiet sleeping in the FJ- helps in quick roadside sleep stops where you have highway noise, etc. Lots of room still on the front seats and dash to store stuff while sleeping. The whole thing takes down & packs up real quick and is pretty light & easy to remove by one person.

Happy FJ sleeping!

Looks nice, but why don't you just throw an air mattress back there? sure, it might be a bit of an 'incline' with the bump, but its a lot easier to tote around

Re: Another sleep-in-it solution...

Huh? How would throwing an air mattress in there give you any kind even remotely level surface to sleep on? Not only would you be sleeping with the existing elevation change somewhere under your hip or legs, there is the void where your head would be (where rear passenger legs would go).An air matress would just sag & not support my head & chest. I am 6'-1" and to sleep in there at that height you need to max the space beyond the existing floor bed you get with the rear seats out flat- if you look at the fold out section, that is extending the truck bed to max the length with front seats fully pushed forward. On top of it, you can put anything you want- air mattress foamies, whatever. Someone show me if I'm wrong, but I cant see how just throwing an air mattress in there is gonna give me a flat sleeping surface, with the rear door closed, unless i'm say 4'-6" tall?? With this setup, my feet just touch the rear door closed.

Re: Another sleep-in-it solution...

chill, my friend
imo, i would never go to the lengths you did to fab something to make the cargo area flat... not unless i'm living in my FJ... but that's just me the only way i'd sleep in my FJ is if i'm stranded somewhere...
i'm not knocking your whatchamacallit, i think you did a good job, but it just seems like overkill and would be a p.i.t.a. to put in/take out....
and if it was mine, i'd guarantee my 2 dogs would find a way to chew it up

carry on
