Landcruisersteve.....could you please do me a favor and measure the outer, side to side distance on your drawer and the outer boxes inner dimensions. Space provided by the drawer rails between the inner and out part would be handy as well.
Runt,

The outside side-to-side width of the drawers are exactly 19".

The inside side-to-side width of the drawer compartments are 20".

And, the space between the drawer sides and the drawer compartment inner walls are 1/2" on each side (to accomodate the thickness of the drawer slides). This is assuming that the center divider section is 3/4" plywood. (If you're using 1/2" plywood, adjust your width measurements accordingly.)

The best way to guarantee proper measurements, is to build the outside box first (leaving the top off for the time being). Then attach your drawer slides to both the inner compartment walls and the outside of the already cut-to-depth drawer sides.

Install the drawer sides onto the inner walls, and then measure and cut your drawers front and rear panels. This will ensure that you have slideable drawers' that will fit the width of the inner compartments.

Anyway, be sure to post up your completed project when it's done. I'm looking forward to seeing how you set up your gun mount system.

Re: Ladies & gentlemen, may I present to you . . . the BOX.

40 & 3/4 " OOOOHHH....thats close. Sounds like this will be one of those fab it and we shall see builds. The idea is to have a single locking drawer that has dividers etc. The rifle will be in the back of the drawer so that you will have to roll it all the way out to have access to the rifle or shot gun. The back seat area I will make a box that will work similiar to your's. Except it will be engineered as to allow the front seat to stay in and still have a flat sleeping surface. When its not being used it will be stacked on top of the other box or removed all together. My wife is 5'9" tall and I'm 5'11" so I should be able to get away with the back seat staying in and more then likely my girls will be the ones sleeping in the Cruiser with Mom & Dad in the tent. We have had a couple balck bears sniffing the sides of the girls heads through the tent a couple times this summer during the night time. A friend of ours had there kids sleeping bag taken out through the wall of there tent when they were out fishing because there child left a bag of chips in there sleeping bag. Might not of been a bear but made me think about my little girls and how they love to have snacks in the tent when there camping. My schedule does not allow me to start doing the Auto Cad drawing until Mid October. Thanks for the measurements Steve. I figured it would be real close and was just to lazy to measure it out (i.e. go to store and measeure rollers etc.). Thanks again.

Okay, now I have a better idea of what you're doing. (Single drawer with divider, versus two drawers divided.)

The total inside measurement from one 3/4" side panel across to the other is 40 5/8" on my set-up, which is pretty darn close to your 40 3/4".

Anyway, you're welcome, Runt. Keep us posted on the progress!!

That's sweet, do you have the layout for building one (template/measurements)?

No blueprints or official plans . . . . just the step-by-step instructions within this thread. The actual measurements for the design that I posted are in a couple of posts towards the beginning of this thread.

GREAT DIY mod! I must admit...when I saw the title, I expected to see a Scion...IDK why...but I did.

I like the rear drawer box the best...great thinking and craftsmanship!
