Maglite, Extinguisher and Recovery Tool Mounts

Over the weekend, I finished mounting my various recovery/emergency tools. On the 4x4 Forum, I posted the pics of FourTreks Hi-Lift mount and the "Paco Stealth Mounts" I fabricated for my shovel. Hi-Lift & Shovel Mounts for Gobi Stealth

I also wanted a place to mount my fire extinguisher, recovery kit, and tools. The "shelf" above the driver's rear wheel-well seemed perfect. I didn't want to drill into the FJ body so I used the existing Shopping Bag clips (or whatever they're called). I purchased some 1/8" x 1 1/2" x 3 feet Aluminum bar. I cut the bar in half so I had two pieces measuring approximately 18". I purchased some longer screws with the same metric thread size as the stock screws. Finally I drilled of series of 1/4" holes in the bar for mounting various things.

Here's a pic of the setup:

You can the see the Super Quick Fist I mounted to the bar that's holding the extinguisher. I need to purchase a few velcro straps to hold the bag and tools in place so they won't conk my labs in the head when I take a turn too fast.

I also wanted to mount my Mag-Lite and thought about putting it along side the extinguisher. However, I really wanted it closer to me--within arm's reach. I realized that there's plenty of room below the rear bench. So I used a self-tapping #10 screw and mounted a regular Quick fist underneath the passenger side bench.

Here's the picture:

The rear seat still folds down without any problems. It doesn't even touch.

Overall, a very productive week end. I have to say, I love quick fists. They're so damn useful, I want to stick them all over my cars and house.

Wait until tnegiet sees this... he had a very similar idea and I owe him some parts...

I think you just got me in big trouble...

Very clever on all accounts!

Re: Maglite, Extinguisher and Recovery Tool Mounts

I was a little hesitant, not having worked with metal since high school. But it was surprisingly simple. Just get a decent drill bit and some cutting oil and you'll be set. You might also want to pick up some emory paper of various grits to sand and polish--drilling and cutting metal will leave some rough edges. Working with the stainless (on the shovel mounts) was a little harder but still pretty easy.

Now, what I really think we should do is to get our good friend Fjoel to make a custom bar for us out of billet aluminum! It shouldn't be too hard--kind of like an elongated flatter grab handle. I can see it coming in custom colors and even with custom logo's.

What about it Fjoel? Certainly easier than those door handles.

You must have been reading my mind. I was responding to ratfink (and mentioning you) as you were drafting!!!

I agree, you could do a much more elegant design than little old me.

Re: Maglite, Extinguisher and Recovery Tool Mounts

I made these for tnegiet...

I don't like plastic. I made another set of these originally but they had counterbores of thier own and another set of screws to attach the bar. The bar was 1/4 thick and too thin, it just twisted. Now with these solid mounts and a half inch bar (almost done) I think you could have you kid/dog do chinups on it.
