Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

Hey,

Anyone out there paint a portion of their hood matte black like the Land Rover Disco's used in the Camel Trophy? I thought it might look pretty good and reduce glare on the sun fusion or ti silver FJ's. Just a thought.

See if you can find a picture of skersfan's rig.
He has his hood painted matte black, I believe.

I always wondered how you keep something like that matte black? Do you not wax it?

I would also like to see what that looks like on an FJ. Our disco has that. It is not paint though, it is vinyl.

Re: Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

My father-in-law had a Camel Trophy Rover. #3. I think a Sun Fusion FJ would look awesome with a black hood. And silver with a black hood also. also. Maybe the Black Cherry with a black hood, but I don't know, I'd have to see it first.

Re: Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

The only thing I'm thinking is, wouldn't it look kinda copy kat maybe wannabe to do it on an FJ. That's a reason why I wouldn't do it on an FJ. But, I'd still like to see what it would look like just for fun. Wouldn't do it myself though for those reasons. I think Land Rover owns that look. Wouldn't mess with it.

Re: Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

I had it on my land rover (see avatar). I dont know how to keep it "shiny" but you DEFENTLY dont wax it, its really hard to get off. I actually thought aobut how sweet it would be to have that on the FJ the day I got it. I would clean it with a bristle brush and westley's bleach white...

Re: Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

I guess it's not COPYCAT if it's functional, I don't think any of us would hesitate to put a snorkel on an FJ, because a Camel Trophy Land Rover had it on there? Didn't those CT trucks have winches too?
Hmm, vinyl eh? I didn't realize that, I always thought it was just painted matte black. I'll have to look into it a bit more. Thanks for all the thoughts. If anyone has a photo of an FJ with the hood painted please post it in here.

Re: Paint the hood like camel trophy trucks?

I thought about the whole copycat thing, but then I thought, unless you said it was a Camel Trophy FJ (which doesn't exist) then you should be ok. I notice a lot of people go badge happy sometimes. For example, I knew a guy with a Mustang, V6, but he had a cobra bumper and duel exhaust and had a cobra badge on the driver door. Last I checked, Cobras were V8's. Back in the day, I was shopping for my first vehicle, and a dealer tried to sell me a 2000 Chrysler Neon R/T. For those that don't know, they don't exist. Chrysler doesn't make Neon R/T's and Dodge didn't even make a Neon R/T in 2000. It had stripes and R/T badges and everything. Except it was listed as 132hp instead of the R/T's 150hp. Kind of off-topic, but my point is, as long as you stay true to the FJ and don't try to make it something it isn't, it's ok. Do whatever you want to the paint job, it's your truck.
