Trouble Removing Factory Rack

Hey...

I recently acquired the ARB Rack ( from ToraSport - AWESOME Vendor) and decided Today was the day to install. I thought removing the Toyota rack was going to be simple...

Well all the bolts were easy to remove, except ONE.

It just spins in place. Any ideas??

thx

I had the same issue , I had a small shim i pryed up on the head of the bold as i twisted the screw, I guess u could use a flat head screwdriver, just put a cloth under it to protect your roof. If that dont work bolt extractors are cheep. Or use a left handed drill bit ever cheeper and easy.

What Chatsworth said, or, it might seem counter-intuitive, but if you apply enough downward pressure to the bolt as your turn it you might be able to keep the bolt receiver from spinning with the bolt. You could also tighten it a bit and see if the receiver seats itself again and then try to loosen the bolt with that pressure idea.

Penetrating oil! Always soak the threads with a penetrating oil before trying to unscrew bolts that have set in place for await. Then shim or wedge the nut (or fixed threaded piece) before applying force to unscrew.

Re: Trouble Removing Factory Rack

Agree with Chatsworth and KLD but I know it may be too late to help now. Did the bolt strip or did the backing nut come loose on the inside?

Re: Trouble Removing Factory Rack

Not sure about the backing nut.

I'm guessing if it has it will mean removing the headliner.

Re: Trouble Removing Factory Rack

Another thought, get a little 2-part epoxy liquid, not the gel. Mix it up and try to get just a wee bit under the crown of the nut, between the roof and the crown of the nut. Let it set up for 24hrs and try it again, with some penetrating oil. You are trying to glue the nut back in place so be careful not to get any epoxy on the threads. A toothpick would work good here, try to get the epoxy to "wick" into place.

Re: Trouble Removing Factory Rack

Alden you might luck out if the ARB does not use that bolt. Slim chance of that I know. Have you tried pulling it up hard while turning, or prying it up with a screwdriver while turning?

Re: Trouble Removing Factory Rack

there's a metal bracket in the headliner that has 2 nuts in it that the rack mounts on. this is held in place by a small metal clip....if you're not careful - the bracket will come lose and start to spin freely inside....the only way I got mine out was to remove the headliner.....

it was a PITA...but I had 3 clips spinning in different locations....

have fun
