Interior / Exterior Visual TechThis section contains discussion related to visual modifications of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Some items might include dash kits, roof rack modifications and other visual modifications.
You have to remember that white light is all the colors of the spectrum of visible light. This can be seen when shining white light through a prism.
It would seem to me that yellowish lights would therefore be less complete and have less light. Perhaps this explains it some.
Is that how it's measured? I mean, you can certainly have a red light that's much brighter then a white light right? But if going by your theory, the white light will always have more light density. I'm not an expert

Also, you will notice when looking inside an H4 bulb there is a dish around the highbeam filament. This could affect the spread! Perhaps this dish shape is what makes the Ultras spread better.
It seems to me the Hellas actually show the hedge best in regards to what it would look like in the daylight.
Ideally we could have had 6 light meters at different stations and gotten spread readings as well, but I am not that much of a geek!
Ah. That explains why the pattern looks better. To me, even though the PIAA has a higher lux, I would still prefer the Ultra and Hella based on what I see from your pictures. PIAA seem to have a steep drop off when you go offcenter.

Nice results! and a note to some of the pictures, if using a digital camera with auto focus, or auto scene imaging, you can take the same picture and sometimes it'll eaqualize the color just a little different. But the care Joel as taken to keep the scene as consistent as possible definetly helps to illiminate that or keep it at a minimum.
Now I gotta go and see what bulbs are left for sale!

Seems the round would work better with the the FJs round housing. BUT, Is 60/80 draw too much????
Went with Bi-xenon HID kit. Instead of these and a new harness that could take the increased wattage. Im very leery about it, but all the rave reviews in this forum made me do it, forum peer pressure I guess. FYI they were aimed much higher then my old IPF bulbs. But again this forum has saved me! Just if anyone is in this thread and needs to know how to re-aim lights its here > adjusting headlights

Well to throw in my two cents (which goes a bit further south of the border these days) I have to say that I opted for the Silver Star Ultras. I like the lights quite well but I have to add that the best lights I have ever had were in my '98 Taco....Best hi beam pattern I have ever seen. The FJ has an incredibly wide spread but the old Taco had the distance in hi beam.

mods so far
Mod, mod, and more mods and it still looks way to friggin' stock.....grrrrr
My first set of PIAA's only lasted me 11 months, so longevity may be the trade off for their extremely white and dense light. However, I cannot say if I did not touch the bulbs or not back then because I was so excited to get them in there. Perhaps my next set will do better now that I know to NEVER TOUCH THE GLASS!
Joel, I don't think it's b/c you touched the glass (well, most likely that is). I put some PIAA's in my sister's old Accord & after 8-9 months one of them went go out. After the 2nd one went out (6-7 months later), I just gave up & bought some cheap oem bulbs since it was getting costly. Thx for the comparison.
PS: Did you get an email from a Lexus IS350 owner wanting to get that aFe intake? I referrred him to you.

Notes: While the Raybrigs offered no improvement over the stock bulbs in terms of light density, they did provide a "less" yellow light, so I listed them above stock. Potentially a waste of money here...
I expected more from the Hellas... though the color of the light was improved, possibly only bested by the Koitos and PIAAs, the density was not the drastic improvement I expected.
