SS Ultras are getting easier to find at PepBoys.

To expand on my theory, which I could probably prove with my multimeter, the three connection points on the bulb are:

Ground
High beam voltage in
Low/Day beam voltage in
Quick question. Is the High Beam voltagein for the left side the Red/Blue wire?

Re: Complete Headlight Bulb Comparison Thread

Since you're a big geek and all, how about trying the lux meter at multiple positions? Straight ahead is nice, but I want my bulbs to shine brightly to the sides as well. I think at 20' directly in front and 20' at a 45 degree angle would yield some pretty cool data.

Seriously...? Why do you need to know?

I think, just thinking here, that the angles won't affect the meter as much with different bulbs. Here is my theory, the bulbs only change the quality and amount of light, the actual pattern would only be affected by the reflectors and lenses.

Do you think the angles will have different values with different bulbs? What leads you to believe this? Good thought.

I have recieved a few more packages. UPS man knows me by first name.

Still need a couple more bulbs and the meter (from Hong Kong... slow!)

I am no expert, but I would think if certain bulbs produce more light, then in theory, there should be more ambient light to the sides. So if the stock bulb puts out X amount of light at a distance of 30' straight in front and 10' to the right or left then another bulb could potentially put out X+1 amount of light in the same location.

I don't think the beam patters will change with the bulbs since the pattern is based on the reflector and not the bulb. Since you are doing all this work anyway, another measurement shouldn't hurt. Maybe you'll record a difference and maybe you won't...who knows. If you look on teh back of the SS boxes, they always show that picture of teh stock vs SS and it shows the SS lighting up more of the sides than the stock (Keep in mind it is on tehir box so who knows how accurate it is)

Re: Complete Headlight Bulb Comparison Thread

I realize it is too late but these look interesting:
Philips X-Treme Power H4 from Power Bulbs
The test/review/award for them can be found here:
Accessory of the year: Philips X-treme Power | Product Honours 2007 | Products | Auto Express

It may be interesting to find the full results of their test, with the scores on their scale for the competition. I haven't been able to yet. But if someone could we could use it to compare to FJOEL's findings. And if FJOEL's unbiased findings match the ones from Autoexpress, we could perhaps lend more credence to their coverage of bulbs he wasn't able to test.

Cheers,

Re: Complete Headlight Bulb Comparison Thread

I couldn't wait. so i bought the SS Ultras.....Man are they bright. I really like them. I can tell they are brighter then my old regular SS, and brighter than the HID's in my old Murano. Side of the road vision is improved too....ask the deer that lived because of it!!

Re: Complete Headlight Bulb Comparison Thread

I got the Light Meter in today... I will try to post some pics soon.

I am waiting on one more set of bulbs... I bought them quite some time ago and will try to contact the seller for an update.

Re: Complete Headlight Bulb Comparison Thread

FJoel, an idea which might help you more easily and less expensively expand your testing is for people to order new bulbs and have them sent "through you" for the 5 minute test before your turning them around and passing them on to their final destination.
I know that when I come around to buying some, if I opt for some you haven't tested yet, I would be happy to go that route.
This would allow you test N bulbs without every having to buy them all yourself and risk people not buying them back off you.

Cheers,

How's it coming along? Did you get the last set of lights? I can't wait to see the results. I'm betting on the SS Ultras though. Heard so many good things about that one.
