Scrolling LED License Plates - anyone have one? ["For Offroad Use Only"]

$40.00

I've been tempted to buy one of these and have a few pre-programmed messages for the tailgaters that somehow think riding my bumper is going to get them home faster.

Considering messages such as:

"If I were a cop I'd write you a ticket"
"I brake for tailgaters"
"Brake check coming - T-minus 5 seconds"
"Heard of the 2 second rule?"
"If you can read this you're too close"

Any feedback on these? I guess they're illegal to use on the highway as they are considered a distraction. I can see how that would be. You can get these at Autoparts stores now... I went in to my local Schucks store yesterday and checked one out - on the packaging it says "For Off-Road Use Only".

The cool thing is it comes with a remote - so you could turn it off when not in use. That way you'd only get a ticket if a cop saw you using it.

On the distraction note - I can see someone getting up close to your bumper to read what it says... thereby negating the original purpose (getting tailgaters to back off).

Thoughts?

I've seen many of these on cars in this area. Frys used to sell them. Haven't seen them in stock there for awhile.

I like how they use a Porsche in the packaging picture. I doubt anyone who owned that model of Porsche would adorn their car with one of those things.

Wicked Illegal. I think if I saw one of those in operation I would report the driver to the cops. Can't think of one good thing about them...well maybe if you're tailgaiting at an NFL game or something. BLING comes to mind!

Not to be fussy or anything, but if you have problems with tailgaters in the Pacific NW, you must be driving amazingly slow. You could just get out of other people way.

Because of a secondary switch I wired to my backup camera my back up lights come on. Turns out this works great for tailgaters.

This was the first mod that most members of the forums did. I believe air has one that says "Futoshi is still new!" scrolling in multi-color, 4RnrJ's says "I live for wrong turns!!" and thenookie's says "Protected by aftermarket alarm!!"

Re: Scrolling LED License Plates - anyone have one? ["For Offroad Use Only"]

I had an old guy brake check me a couple times in one of my work vans once, (I was about 25 years old). He slowed slow down to 5 MPH while flppping me off. I pushed him off the road, and went on my way.

I look back on that now and realize how brutally stupid that was and how careless and reckless I was, but antagonizing the guy B E H I N D you is not a good idea. He has control of the situation (in a tactical sense).

Read up on road rage deaths and rethink your idea to irritate the guy behind you (with an illegal product). The world will be a better place if we just forgive and be a little nicer.

Funny messages would be nice....still illegal on the road....but nice.

I am not proud of what I did, on the contrary. But I think I learned the depth of my own ability to make a bad decision based on emotion. I would take a breath and maybe pull over today....but that day...it was ON!

NickleTech, I found a bumper sticker on the net that said "If you are going ride my a$$ at least pull my hair" for those tailgaters.
