Re: Back Breaking

That's a tough one and most likely nothing other than a lot of change will solve the problem. For me, the factory seats seem to be "quite nice" once I found the adjustment sweet spot. I can't "lie down" in a car seat or my lower back will go out in about 30 seconds. I always need to sit upright and keep my behind pushed back in the seat. If I slouch, I'll be in trouble. I also discovered that if I adjust the seat up as far as it will go and then forward to the correct reach to the steering wheel, I have a much better hip position. I'm 5"11" and have long legs, but with the seat adjusted up it fits better. More like siting in a chair. Ron

Re: Back Breaking

I've got two herniated disks in my back and one of the requirements of my new car were that the seats were comfortable. Stock is so-so, but with the addition of a padded cover it's 100x better.

I'm anxiously awaiting the third round of the okole group buy so I can replace this embarrassing DIY memory foam bed topper seat cover that I'm currently using.

Re: Back Breaking

Wonder if you could have one of the auto seat shops do you a leather cover, like CowboyCEO and others have, but with an inch or two of memory foam underneath? You could fabricate the pad with lumbar, etc.. support and cut it to fit the top of the seat.. They could just cover over the top of it Ron

Re: Back Breaking

What I'm planning on doing after I get the okole covers is cutting up some more memory foam and adding it to the areas of my back that need it most. But I'm hoping that the additional .5" of padding that comes with the covers will suffice.

I've become pretty good at carving the foam to support the areas around the disks and all that would be done is to have my wife sew in small pouches underneath the cover to hold the bits of foam.

Sounds like you have identified a pretty good business opportunity....should prove lucrative for the FJ market alone. I like the idea of pouches in the seat cover as opposed to the Okole solution of strapping a support to the seat itself.

Let us know how it worked out.

Re: Back Breaking

The seats wre almost a deal breaker for me when I started considering the FJC. Horribly uncomfortable as opposed to my '97 Taurus SHO with leather....and the SHO seat was not especialy great.

Bought the FJC anyway and my back bothered me even after short rides around town.

Thought my back was gonna break after each trip of 100 miles or so.

Finally, after some amount of time, I seem to have grown "accustom" to the (poor) fit of the seat. It still bothers me a little on longer rides, but I no longer notice any discomfort around town.

Air inflatable (infinite adjustments) lumbar support would help a whole lot.

Maybe you could tell us where to get stronger backs? I wonder if you will hold the same position in 10 to 20 years from now??

Re: Back Breaking

OK I went to Toyota and did a rough measurement of the 4 runner seat and the highlander seat. I am 90% sure they are the same footprint. The Highlander is a new model this year, so finding its seat in a salvage yard may be difficult, but the 4-Runner has had the same seat since 05 with a slight change in 07 (airbag). Therefore, the 4-Runner seat or Highlander seat (this is a really nice one) may bolt right into the FJ. The head clearance in the FJ is greater than that of the 4-Runner which is also a plus. You can probably pick up a 4Runner seat from a salvage yard for $4 to 5 hundred. I will keep you updated on my research.

BTW ... it seems obvious to me that a Manufacturer would not completely redesign every aspect of their vehicle each time they release a new model. I am not sure why some think this would be the case. The engine and trans in the FJ is from the 4Runner.
