I've used one in the past, it worked OK, but I was not happy about the sloppy tolerences used on the mount-I had to shim it to keep it from having too much extra play. I still have it-It's for sale. I personally am buying a full-size ARB roof rack.

yeah.......I picked up one of those back in Aug......it's deffinately a good idea.....depending on what you put on it, it can seem a little flimsy and also....I needed to shim mine also as there was a bit too much play in the mount.....mine carried a large cooler and a large Rubbermaid action packer.....I used a bike lock (coated cable type) and ran it through the hitch hoops andn then through the hitch mount to keep others from helping themselves to the rack.....I think it would be helpfull if you were transporting firewood or something else dirty you wouldn't want inside the FJ.....hope this helps in any decsions!!

Re: Trail hitch Cargo carrier

Same here I have one and it seems to be a little small for the hitch receiver but a couple wraps with duct tape and it is all better, but other than that it is a great investment.

Re: Trail hitch Cargo carrier

i use one and it also rattled. i have been using a ratchet strap hooked to one of the holes on the left side of the carrier and ratcheted tight to the tow hook under the left side of the bumper, which eliminated the rattle. i have since bought an anti-rattle bracket, but have not tested it yet, so i don't know how well the bracket works.

Re: Trail hitch Cargo carrier

wow, i didnt realize there was a common problem with these. I am thinking about it because it want to put a small webber bbq back there along with a cooler and rubbermaid packer.

How's the clearance with the spare tire? It seems like it would be tight. Also, I was thinking of the access to the rear door with it on. Seem unlikey the door would be able to open.

The ARB full rack is still at the top of my list. But I got such great gas mileage on this weekends Mammoth trip. 309 miles and just under a quarter of tank left still.

with my 100 qt. cooler, i am unable to open the door...i have to unload the carrier. as far as accessing the back of the FJ, it is a little cumbersome with the carrier...i've scraped my legs a few times by rushing my packing or unpacking. i use my roof rack for my kayaks and such. compact heavy items i like to keep as low as possible. i don't even want to try to load or unload a cooler full of ice and fish from the top of the FJ.

Re: Trail hitch Cargo carrier

great for holding gas containers when filling for the mowers, better than risk spilling fuel inside

Re: Trail hitch Cargo carrier

We live in the sticks with no garbage service. The first time I had to take our trash to the collection station after I bought the FJ, this idea was a no brainer. I checked the local supplier and found one at about $200. I then checked Harbor Freight and found this one. It's aluminum, no rust, light weight, and works great for haulin' stuff. I can open the rear door if the carrier is empty or has a very low load. I've used it for the trash, haulin' fuel for the tractor, fire wood, mother-in-law, and whatever else I wanted to carry and not have to put inside due to smell, fumes, or mouth. Good $80 investment in my humble opinion. Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices
I this link doesn't work, go to harborfreight.com and it's item number 92655-5VGA
