Over the past week, in my spare time, I built this console out of 1/2" MDF, glued and screwed, then sanded to brake the sharp edges, and then painted with contact cement and covered with fabric-backed vinyl.
It sits on top of the original console and can (for now) be removed just by lifting it up.
I set the armrest height to be the same as the door armrests, and aligned the compartment to the storage compartment of the original console below it, which makes the compartment taller and a little wider at the top.
The console armrest is closed cell foam, Ensolite, glued to a 1/2" MDF backing, and then covered with the same vinyl, and piano-hinged at the rear. Cost me $30 to have the vinyl sewn professionally.
I also have construction pics if anybody's interested.

Another view same side.

Armrest is same height as door armrests.
Had to finesse some by the brake handle.

I made it longer than the original console to make sure I had a complete armrest area and it wasn't just lip service.
View from passenger side. Cupholders are just dropped-in right now and the passenger side cupholder is a bit out of place in this picture.
