I use the little glove box above the steering wheel for my single stack "fully loaded" springfield champion stainless .45 auto. Fits perfectly (does not slide around) w/2 xtra mags. I keep it in a slim waistband holster for quick exit and concealment if need be.
So because our crime rate and homicide rate is high, I, as a law obiding citizen, should give up my gun in hopes that the gang banger who kills people indiscriminately and cares nothing about laws or doing the right thing will see this and follow suit and say.......well, I should be good too so I'll give it up............ROFL!!! WAIT!??!??!! Did anyone get that? Does anyone actually belive that this will happen? What will actually happen is that once the descent people are unarmed, criminals will not need to fear anyone and crime will run rampant. Don't tell me to get rid of my gun. Give me a solution.....a real one. Hang on to your guns good people, you will need them. Those of you who don't have one.......go get one and learn how to use it before you put it under your pillow and forget about it. You'll end up shooting yourself or your family/friends/neighbors. Think about it, if every household set by law had a gun and the owners knew how to use it, do you really think that home invasions would be as prevalent. The reason that convenience store roberies are down and home invasions are up is because convenience stores now all have camera's and people in private homes are easy targets. By the way, this also goes for car jackings and street crimes. They're on the rise people. By the way folks, I'm not a yahoo talking out of my rear. I actually did a paper on pro gun control in college and what I found in my research was that the states with the most gun control ie: New York, Los Angeles are the highest in crime. The research of this paper actually changed my view on gun control and now I'm an owner. Educate yourself folks, don't let people tell you what they think and take it as bible.

unfortunatly no one can dispute The US is the most violent nation among modern high tech and industrialized nations.... unless you count mexico and russia as an equal in any manner.
[edit] International comparison
“ "Due to the difficulties of comparing national crime trends between countries some of the data included in this report may be adjusted or estimated. This is because of differences in measuring crimes and definitions of crime type. The report does however state clearly which pieces of data have been adjusted and why."-David P. Farrington, Patrick A. Langan, Michael Tonry (Bureau of Justice Statistics), 2004[29]
”
Despite the overall crime rate of the United States being seemingly in line with that of other industrialized countries, its homicide rate, which has declined substantially since 1991, is still among the highest in the industrialized world. Comparing just homicide rates by themselves, however, may not be representative of the overall crime rate of a country. Only the homicide rate of Northern Ireland in the early 1990s compares to that of the United States today. In 2004, there were 5.5 homicides for every 100,000 persons, compared to 1.9 in Canada and 1.0 in Germany.[30] This means that the homicide rate in the United States was nearly three times as high as in Canada and slightly more then five times as high as in Germany.[7][31] Most industrialized countries had homicide rates below the 2.5 mark. Overall the homicide rate in the United States was similar to that of some lesser developed Eastern European countries.[32][33][34]
Overall the national crime rate was 3982 crimes per 100,000 residents, down 17.6% from 4852 crimes per 100,000 residents thirty years earlier in 1974.[5][6] The severity of crime in international comparison depends on the nature of the crimes considered in such comparison. For example, while the homicide and violent crime rates of the United States were much higher than those of Canada, property crime rates in the US were considerably lower. The overall crime rate in the United States is similar to that of other highly developed countries such as Canada.[7][8] Additionally there tend to be great regional differences within the US with New England having a violent crime and homicide rate comparable to that of most other developed nations, while southern states were among the most violent.
This is an unfortunateand complex situation we find ourselves in a free society...it is just not possible to tell the legal responsible gun owner from the violent criminal in a capitalist system.... the freedom to buy legal or illegal comes first here... good or bad we live with it..... but with all respect you would still be much safer in Ireland.
This past Saturday night, I was sleeping and around 2:30 am I had a heavy heavy knock at my front door and repeated doorbell rings. Instinct kicked in and I reached over to my nightstand, grabbed my .40 Sigpro and headed for the front door quickly. Through the window I viewed two guy's in black which, in my slumber I assumed were police officers. I tucked the sig in my waistband and answered the door to two guy's who were definately not law inforcement. I quickly re-armed myself and asked what the heck they wanted at 2:30 am. They quickly appologised and said they had the wrong house and took off running, I yelled that they certainly did have the right house (I'm keeping it clean for the forum folks). I called the police and informed them of what had happened and to get them there quickly, told them they were still at the door...........well, half hour later (apparently they were busy) they showed up. Talked to the officer, he stated they had just broken up a party down the street and what the hoodlums are doing now is looking for houses with a for sale sign in front, check to see if anyone is there and kick the door in. They move the party there and trash the house. The officer told me considering the way I answered the door and armed, they probably would not be back but consider for a moment if I didn't have a firearm, would things have ended up the same way? Maybe so, maybe no but I can tell ya one thing, being that it took the officer almost 30 minutes to get to my house because they were busy (and I don't doubt they were) it's nice to know I have a first line of defense. By the way, I also keep a Mossberg A-1 9+1 loaded with #2 nitro express followed by .00 buck and then 1 oz. slugs. Plus, I have these in my safe incase Iraq invades.
By the looks of your arsenal, I'm glad you're on MY side!
Just this last weekend, I was considering the same issue. I have an old paddle holster that I don't use, and considered figuring out a way to mount it on the side of the console, right by my right knee. That would ensure that it's available with a minimum of movement.
However, I hadn't considered some of the side issues that have been brought up on this thread. Thanks for giving me more to consider. I think I'll also look for a mounting place under the steering wheel ...

No no, not under the steering wheel, sorry, I may not have been clear. I meant the little glove box over the steering wheel above the guage cluster in front of the driver on the dash.
Wow. you guys are serious. I just dont hear or see that type of predatory violence up here. If **** did go down, I have "items" that would deter anyone, just not a gun. then there are my dogs. i dont even lock my doors when my wife and i are at work all day because it is on lockdown. 2 german rotties and 2 american pitbulls are just waiting. so its not like im completely defenseless, just cant drive around with a gun thats all. Very crafty set-up nonetheless.

Ideally, I'd like to build a mechanism that interlocks with the door lock system. I want it to drop a pin through the trigger guard when the door is locked, *unless* the engine is running. I want it to retract the pin when the door unlocks, either by key or by keyless remote.
I think it's a marketable mod... have any thoughts?
Excellent concept, Jon. The weapon is accessible to you, only when you are in legitimate control of your vehicle.
The only thing that needs to be absolutely precise, is the trigger guard locking pin conforming to the specific weapon. The locking pin may safely secure one type of handgun, yet possibly press against the trigger of another (i.e., a 1911 style that is chambered and hammer back, but not necessarily on safety), thus inadvertantly discharging a round.

Not to nit pick, but this would be nearly impossible on a true 1911 pistol as three things must happen in order for a Condition One (****ed and locked) 1911 to fire: 1) the thumb safety must be positively disengaged, 2) the grip safety must be depressed while simultaneously 3) the trigger is pulled. Not saying that negligent discharges don't happen on a 1911 pistol, but in fact they are just about the safest thing that can be carried ready for action IMO. Granted you did say "not necessarily on safety" but that would be a idiotically negligent way to carry or stow a 1911 pistol and it is still difficult to imagine how the holster retention mechanism could depress the grip safety and the trigger at the same time.

I did something similar. I mounted mine on the inside of the console set to the drivers seat. Its pretty concealed and can be drawn with very little arm movement.[IMG][/IMG]
