every time I would tell the cop I am armed and have a permit. Not ONCE did any cop even look at, ask for, or show any interest in my permit.
Reminds me of that priceless scene in the movie "The Untouchables," where Sean Connery notices a handgun bulge in Kevin Costner's coat. Costner merely says he's a federal officer, and wonders why Connery didn't ask for any proof.
Connery: "Who in the world would ever claim that they're a federal officer if they weren't??"

Well, you do have to admit that there are more "idiotically negligent" people packing guns out there than we would like to acknowledge.
Scary, but I'm sure you're right. A couple of the other people in my CHL class scared me; I was hoping they wouldn't pass but don't know if they did or didn't.

And sure enough, at least one of them would manage to wrap their hand around the grip safety while simultaneously pushing/pulling the handgun so that the trigger ends up depressed by the locking pin. Anything protruding inside a trigger guard of a hammer-back handgun (other than one's intentionally-placed finger when it's time to fire) could result in a very large hole in one's firewall . . . . or much worse.
OK, I could see that as a possibility... would still hope that the thumb safety would be engaged until the pistol was out but you never know.
Excellent concept, Jon. The weapon is accessible to you, only when you are in legitimate control of your vehicle.
The only thing that needs to be absolutely precise, is the trigger guard locking pin conforming to the specific weapon. The locking pin may safely secure one type of handgun, yet possibly press against the trigger of another (i.e., a 1911 style that is chambered and hammer back, but not necessarily on safety), thus inadvertantly discharging a round.
Otherwise, a great idea.
Yeah. I was thinking about that. That's why I'd go with an Uncle Mike's kydex holster (made specifically for my weapon form) and then run the locking mechanism as a steel band around the outside, and a pin that travels just behind the leading edge of the trigger guard, well away from the trigger. Since the weapon can't bury any deeper, the trigger couldn't get to the pin. The steel band formed up around the kydex would doubly insure this, also. I want the kydex to hold the weapon silently (no rattling) and all the steel does is to stop a car burgler from getting away with my weapon without doing a substantial disassembly of the vehicle (even some in-cab lock boxes pop free with a single crow bar move - I want to do better). I just have to get ahold of the servo that runs the door locks and figure out where to tap into the control circuit. The default will be for it to remain locked. That is, someone would have to either have a key or hotwire the door locks - not just break in, to get the gun... or steal the whole car and disassemble the dashboard.
I guess... if I wanted to get *really* nasty... I could rig the locking pin to actually DEPRESS the trigger if the car starts and there is no physical key in the lock... then I'd just have to troll the local ERs for the guy with a gunshot wound to the right foot...
The only other thing I guess I should incorporate is a "valet" button which re-locks it even when the other criteria are met.
Logic:
doors locked + ignition off = weapon locked
doors unlocked + ignition off = weapon accessible (synch with door locks)
doors locked + ignition on = weapon remains accessible (bad street mode)
valet toggle off = weapon locked in all conditions
I mounted a Fobus left hand holster to the side of the console under the ignition.
It is out of the way and easy draw. I think I might switch to a Blackhawk CQC with serpa because the force needed to draw from the fobus can pull on the panel it is mounted to at a funny angle and has a little play. When pulled straight out there is no problem.
I drilled 2 small holes and put a woodscrew mount with teeth so I did not have to remove the dash to install. I then used a washer and screw through the belt loop holes and torqued it down. It is very stable.
I carry a glock 27 but I also have a glock 17. On long trips I will keep the 27 on me and the 17 in the new mount. Next I am going to mount some magazine holders under the steering colum.
Future Mods: Chainlink steering wheel and dingle balls.

Awesome! I was thinking about this exact setup while I was waiting for my CCF to come in the mail... Never got around to it, but I might still do it just for fun.
The new bill that passed Sept 01 2007 is House Bill 1815. Gets that "travel" and burden of proof thing out of the way. Extends your vehicle as part of your personal property. It is pretty explicit about the right to carry in your auto.
From HB 1815
(a) A person commits an offense if the person [he] intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly carries on or about his or her person a handgun, illegal knife, or club if the person is not:
(1) on the person's own premises or premises under the person's control; or
(2) inside of or directly en route to a motor vehicle that is owned by the person or under the person's control.
Be careful with where you mount the handgun. In AZ, if the concealed weapon is easily reachable by anyone else in the vehicle and they do not have a CCW, they can be charged with having a concealed weapon - Even if YOU have the CCW.
The laws in your state are probably different, so you will need to do your own research.
What makes it muddy here, and I wouldn't want to be the one to test it, is that a gun in a holster that is visible is ok. I don't know what the police would do if they came across this mount. (I like it, BTW and am trying to figure out what I want to do for my handgun...)
This discussion came up the last time I renewed my CCW...

My wife and I took the CHL class the other day. The instructor had already commented that he wouldn't yell or scream but would keep repeating the command until it was followed. So here we are on the firing range and we hear "quit shooting the ceiling, quit shooting the ceiling" being repeated over and over several times. This was followed by "put the gun down, put the gun down" being repeated. Never found out if who that was or if it was the same person but it was pretty funny.
