Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

Now keep in mind that this is not intended to be a complete survival kit. It is only a major component that compliments the M-PAC system. The reference to 48 hours is only in the fact that it contains enough nutrition for one person for that period of time. If you're really hungry the rack will hold 4 such packs
A person would be wise to augment such a pack with something like my other post http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forum...mpartment.html which outlines my hidden compartment pack. There's a lot of stuff that you could build into a survival system, if you want to live on coconut oil (not a bad idea)...it's OK with me. There is no perfect answer for everyone. I think that you need to choose what's right for you.
The nice thing about this pouch is that it is easily moved from car to wherever needed and it has a superior shelf life. The kit I am suggesting is exactly what I have hanging in my FJ now (prepared for long winter drives).
If enough of you are interested I can easily reproduce it, or you can put one together yourself. It is merely a shelf stable pantry for your car.

I think its a great idea. Thanks Doc. More people should look into keeping something like this in their vehicles.

48 hours??? -- Water. Even the skinniest person has enough fat stores for 48 hours. Plus, I always keep 1 pt of virgin coconut oil in the FJ, for sunburn, cooking, eating, etc. It stores for several years, tastes good, and 1pt =3840Kcal (about 4000 cal). It is also pure energy, requires no cooking.
As much as I was honest above, I think it is a good idea.

Don't get me wrong, I was not knocking the coconut oil at all. I have kept an eye out for a long time for a food product that is shelf-stable in the extreme temps of an automobile. It sounds to be a reasonable source of calories and fat.
My opinion on survival plans is that a person should be capable/educated enough to survive in an unusual situation...thus tools and knowledge are more important than food. I think every car should at least have a small kit with the capability to start a fire and purify H2O...you are right, water will take you a long ways in an emergency situation. As long as a person has a plan...that's all that counts.

Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

In a pinch these would last longer than 48hrs, as the ACMS states the mimimum caloric intake should be >1200 cal/day. Re water: The First Need water filter is a part of my gear box. This baby even removes organic chemicals! In the desert you can usually find springs for filtering when/if water stores are depleted. Like MC-I never leave home without it! During my tour of duty, I had the pleasure of eating unhydrated MRE's -Get the First Need! It's edible, but so are monkey brains, and if given a choice-I'd rehydrate! .02 worth, Tim

Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

I could not agree more, I personally don't carry a water filter but have opted for the purification tablets instead. Not that I need them that much either since Iowa is abundant with spring water that is more pure than the stuff coming out of your tap. A person just needs the knowledge of where to find such sources. You may note that in my Hidden Compartment pack, I have bendy straws for drinking water directly from such sources.
Theoretically, I suppose there is a risk for Giardia (parasite), but in 40 years I have never gotten sick. I thinks it is pretty safe taking it right from the spring.
