Springtail 48 hour survival pack

I have been knocking around the idea of putting out a 48 hour survival pack. it would consist of our large Utility pouch packed with Mountain house Freeze-dried foods.
Let me know what you think? I've got the price as low as I can (I have never seen mountain house products anywhere for less than retail).
The goal was to find a long term food product that will do well in a vehicle. Mountain House is good quality and tastes good. We considered MREs but given the heat of most autos, the life span of the MREs was probably less than 2 years.

Springtail 48 hour Survival Food Pack

Springtail is proud to announce that we have become a Mountain House Freeze Dried Foods dealer.
In order to help you prepare for an emergency, we have introduced a 48-hour food unit of Mountain House freeze dried foods consisting of three (3) full meals a day. This mobile food kit starts you and your family off on the road to disaster preparedness, and gives you the satisfaction of knowing you won't go hungry in an emergency. If you want to store the best...look no further than...Mountain House and Springtail.
The average person needs 2,000 calories per day to function at a minimum level. These are factory fresh pouches that have a seven year shelf life and since they are freeze dried, they will serve as an excellent food product to store in a vehicle for long periods of time.
Freeze-dried foods are easy to prepare-just add hot water...wait 10 minutes...and eat! If a heat source is not available, room temperature or cold water can be used, too. Because no cooking is needed, these foods require much less water and fuel than most fresh, frozen or dehydrated foods (further conserving these two precious commodities.)

It would be the big pouch in the middle of the rack. I can only fit in it enough for 1 person for 2 days (ie 4000 calories).

I can get bigger bags made but they would not fit on the rack.

Also, I can order as much Mountain house food as you want as long as it is in cases (6 pouches per case) or cans.
Check out their website Mountain House: Food, Meals, Snacks and Kits for Camping, Backpacking, Emergency Preparedness, Food Storage. We have your Food needs covered when it comes to Outdoor Activities, Disaster Survival and Long Term Storage.

Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

The mountain house products can be made right in their own pouch and do not require hot water (no too appealing of a thought, but hey...it's survival food). Mountain House is a well respected and high quality product. I would not pack something as an emergency food that I did'nt like...all the chosen entrees are their best sellers and taste good.
Mountain house does offer heater packs as well. No silverware needed as we will throw in some plastic silverware too.

Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

Mountain House food is tasty but is has, uhm undesireable side effects. Especially when confined to a tent. The air quality tends to spiral downward a few hours after a meal if you get my drift.

Doc: Good idea. A suggestion if I may. Consider making fully half the entrees vegetarian. MH has some truly excellent freeze-dried vegetarian entrees, that I, as a die hard meat eater, prefer sometimes, to the meat dishes (which are also very good).

Also, if you are inclined to suggest or enclose a stove, I'd recommend an alcohol stove. The fuel is relatively easy to get, the stoves very lightweight and stuipid simple to run. And they are cheap. Also, with a lightweight windscreen, they will operate adequately, though not as well as a canister or pressurized stove, in unhappy conditions.

I'd suggest staying away from a stove being enclosed for reasons of (1) liability (too many boneheads out there!), (2) no need and (3) space in the pack.

You might consider enclosing a spoon.

Water can be boiled over a wood fire, an improvised candle, an improvised oil or diesel lamp, a grease fire, etc.... and it can be boiled in a bucket, pot, tin can, beer or pop can, etc. So there's really no need to enclose a stove or pot. Perhaps some firestarting tools/device, a chunk of aluminum flashing for an improvised pot and perhaps some tinder, but no real need for a real container or stove. After all, cold water will make the grub edible, if not tasty.

Edit: Doc, ya beat me to the spoon thing. Got interrupted mid post!

Simon

Re: Springtail 48 hour survival pack

48 hours??? -- Water. Even the skinniest person has enough fat stores for 48 hours. Plus, I always keep 1 pt of virgin coconut oil in the FJ, for sunburn, cooking, eating, etc. It stores for several years, tastes good, and 1pt =3840Kcal (about 4000 cal). It is also pure energy, requires no cooking.

How about some freeze dried water. Just Playing. I like the idea. I think if and when I get it I'll just add a can of sterno. You would be amazed at some of the things I can cook with a canteen cup and a can of sterno gel.
