Re: Third row seat with custom lock box base and MPAC gear rack

Wow sweet setup. I see that the seat belts are mounted on the backs, how sturdy are they and do the seats have fixed back positions or are they some what adjustable?

Looks great. Really nice job.

However, do you think having the seat bolted to the floor alone is safe? It appears the seatbelts are integrated with the seat rather than anchored to the something more substantial on the FJ itself. I question how effective this setup would be in a collision. Does the mfg conduct crash testing?

I only ask because I have small children and would love a setup like this also, I don't want to sound critical of what you've done.

Thanks.
There have been numerous vehicles that incorporated the seatbelts into the seat/bracket - front and back. For example (okay, not a model of safety... but an example) CJs had the seatbelts mounted to the rear seat frame. The entire assemble is held in with 4 large bolts.

My concern is less about the seat (most good aftermarket seats meet Fed regs) and seat belts and more about distance between the 3rd row and the back of the FJ/front of the Suburban who didn't see the light turn red. I assume that the space behind the second row was designed to collapse to protect the occupants in the 2nd and 1st two rows. I'd be nervous putting people in the crumple zone (if it is a crumple zone - just a guess) on the road. On the trial - hell yes. And what a cool view - facing backwards.

Re: Third row seat with custom lock box base and MPAC gear rack

Like a lot of others have said.. I don't even need a third seat as I don't use the second seat, but that's a nice job you did there. Ron

That looks really great. I would love a 3 row just to seperate my kids from yelling at one another.

It won't work.. They'll fight over the top of the seats like cats Mine (25 & 21) still make catty remarks when seated together.. Ron

It does meet federal safety specifications according to the manufacturer and I stuck with the method they provided for anchoring it to the floor. Believe me it's rock solid. You'd have to rip through the whole cargo area floor for this thing to budge. They use long mounting bars underneath with welded nuts that make for a solid fit.

I agree that safety is critical and that's why I went with all steel for the box so that I wouldn't have any weak point between the seat and the floor mount.
That looks like a quality product and a super-clean install. Still, I hate being such a downer but... expect to get sued senseless if any third party (like your kid's friends) gets injured in a accident while seated back there . The seat itself may meet fed regs, but that says nothing about mounting it in the storage position of the FJC. Regardless of how safe it appears back there, the FJC was not designed to carry extra passengers back there and you will be liable. I am no lawyer but this appears obvious to me. I can picture a greedy, POS lawyer rubbing his hands together...
