Re: Coleman Rack is on!

It is very low profile on the OEM Rack....I'll measure it tomorrow and let ya know how low it is.

This is how I got it on:
I placed some towels down to protect the roof. I removed the OEM top bar rail and moved the lower front rail one behind the rear rail. I then just placed the rack right on the roof and started moving it back. I had the girlfriend push from the front and I was on the roof pulliing it into place. The Coleman rack did "grind" (for a lack of a better term) against the OEM rack. I'll probably Rust spray the OEM rack where the scratchs are. The Spray is almost an exact match for the OEM black color of the rack.

I did notice that I had to even it out as it slid back. The Coleman didn't want to sit exactly even (I was being picky) until I slid the rack into the OEM lower rail which evened it perfectly. I assume that Toyota places all the OEM rails in the same spot from the factory, if your looking to have yours fit like mine.

If I was to do it over again, I might have tried using black tape on the inside rails of the OEM rack for protection. Also It may have slid in a bit smoother with some car washing soap to reduce the friction. If I had moved the second lower OEM rail, the rack may have slid a bit farther back, but I liked where I have it now as it still give room for gas cans on the OEM lower rails.

Only other issue is that the Coleman is so close to the roof, that if I load the Coleman up, it may rub on the roof. I plan on getting those clear little rubber sticky protectors and placing thom on the under side of the Coleman when I pack stuff on top.

I'll throw some more pics up too if you let me know what ya want to see.

Re: Coleman Rack is on!

So you COULD have mounted it further forward if you'd wanted to? Interesting idea on the mounting brackets - wish I'd seen this before I ordered $50 in additional brackets. Hrm - maybe I can re-sell them or use them for something else...

Re: Coleman Rack is on!

Yes you can mount it closer to the front if you like. My rack sits about 2 inches from the FJ rack.

Re: Coleman Rack is on!

Very nice, good job! I will be planning the same setup down the road and this definitely helps.

Couldn't find a Japanese made shovel to go with your FJ? Name: bicycle.gif

J/K.....Looks good. May want to think about getting some rubber tubing like washer fluid tube or vacuum line and slide it over the u-bolts. Kinda like putting a little wet-suit on your u-bolts. That will stop the wear and chaffing that's gonna happen when metal and metal vibrate together. It'll stop them squeeks from happening too. It doesn't make noise now but after a twist and turn on the trail or the speed bump at the market and you'll hear something.

Re: Coleman Rack is on!

I'll probably go the rubber tubing route... right now they are wapped in black eletrical tape... I'm looking at quick fists for a better solution.

I couldn't find a blue japanese (or US) shovel.... lol
