Re: Coleman Rack is on!

Heat-shrink tubing would work on the u-bolts as well...

Alternately, you can buy something called "rubberized tool dip paint" for about $12 -$15 a can from places like Lowe's or Home Depot and just dip 'em. It comes in a tall can and can be used for this, for tool handles or anything else. I've used tool dip paint on things like tow hooks, where they were in the elements for months at a time and it holds up very well against rain, snow or other elemental hazards. The can has a plastic lid (like a Pringle's can) so you can save the left-overs, but here's a tip: cover the opening of the can with a double-layer of TIN FOIL before snapping on the plastic lid, and the paint will stay viable for future dipping for up to 6 moths (mine did anyway).

My plan is to start with high-temp BBQ paint (wonderful stuff - hard as iron and dries totally MATTE black) on the shackles, nuts and retaining plate, then when it's dry, put a piece of heat-shrink or the rubber tool dip paint (either/or) on the u-bolt and snug it down.

Thanks again for this write-up - I'll be doing this hopefully this week!

Re: Coleman Rack is on!

HEY SAFETYDAVE!!

Quick question for ya... I was building the Coleman rack last night, and in the instructions it clearly states to NOT use the sides of the rack as an attachment point because it's "unstable". Your installation looks pretty solid to me, but before I buy my final hardware, I wonder how solid the final installation is, and if you're put anything in the basket yet? Any issues with flexing or moving, or with the basket hitting the roof when loaded? there are black plastic caps on my basket (meant to protect the ends of the basket and are to be removed when assembled) that would be prefect for "bumpers" if so...

Also, I'm thinking of flipping the basket "backwards" and putting the end with the air dam brackets to the REAR, since I dislike the black wedge look that the plastic diverter gives (I'll just leave that part off entirely) - has anyone done this? If so, did wind noise drive you kookoo for Coa-puffs?

Costco no longer has this item. Calisun has mentioned they ran out about a month ago.

I haven't put any good amount of wieght in it yet. As I mentioned before, I'm sure the basket would hit the rook if I had lots of wieght in it. This is because I got the basket so close to the roof. I plan on useing those clear rubber stoppers between the basket and the roof.

No issues with it moving or flexing...its in there tight. As far as the little black bumpers, I use them as cat toys. I don't think there would be an issue with it backwards. I noticed I had road noise without the wind shield on. I'm not sure if it would be bad the basket was reversed.

So far NO RUST too!!!!

Amazon.com had the rack also but is out of stock last time I checked.

I installed a very similar cargo basket a while back. Check this thread there are a few different sources for the rack mentioned.
