leather wheel

Did anyone buy the toyota leather steering wheel after they bought their FJ? I bought mine without the bells and whistles and this might be one I might add.

Re: leather wheel

I thought it was standard equipment. Edit: oops, never mind, I just looked at my option sheet and saw that it's in Upgrade Pckg #2. What does your steering wheel look like as it is right now?

Re: leather wheel

basically a rubber circle. I know that they get dirty pretty fast also from the grime on our hands and leather is easier to clean but I also prefer the bulk of the leather and the texture of the stiching to hold on to. I just would prefer it to be stock looking and not some aftermarket weave

Re: leather wheel

nope mine came with one of the packages but still contemplating getting another leather wrap like I had on my J**P that is laced one and very nice to give some extra wear protection....but I like the feel and look of the FJ version very much.

Re: leather wheel

I purchased mine with the leather steering wheel, and very happy that I did. As mentioned above, it adds some bulk to the steering wheel that I need (I have large hands). I also like the appearance.

I have had vehicles in the past without the leather cover, and the rubber that is used seems to degrade within a few years (the coating coming off and exposing the foam). I have been trying to change my hand postion while driven, especially on long trips, to try to get a more even wear.

One thing that I have been meaning to do is look into maintenance of the leather. I would guess that it would be a good idea to use a leather moisturizer every so often to keeb the leather soft, and prevent cracking. Does anybody have any input in regards to this?

Re: leather wheel

Most of the time the leather will outlast you EXCEPT the top part of the wheel that is exposed to sun, but since the fj's wheel doesnt go under the windshield like most cars and trucks I wouldnt worry about it. In fact I would advice against it because it might get slippery on you unless you rub whatever you put on it really good.

I was hoping a vendor or aftermarket toyota part person might see this and be able to get their hands on it or get a part number.

Maybe ill need to call sparks or 1st toyota and see if they know.

These guys http://www.toyota-parts-dealer.com/parts.htm show them to $597 (MSRP $842). I guess it must be the entire assembly with the airbag and all.

BTW, good point on the sun not getting the steering wheel constantly. I don't like it to be slippery for obvious reasons.

I'm thinking that for $597, you only get the steering wheel. The non-leather wheel does not come with the audio controls on the left, so the cover on the airbag is different (the airbag itself is the same).
You might want to search for a steering wheel from a salvage vehicle.

Re: leather wheel

I just looked at the illustration, and sure enough it is just for the steering wheel itself (not the covers, airbag, etc...).
