I got some grip tape at Home Depot that's not as wide and haven't had any issues.

if you keep it on the "top/inside" you shouldn't have trouble with it scraping your legs, but have just enough grip to keep you from sliding when standing on top... mine sit too close to the rocker panels to even stand on...
