Re: Does the windshield get removed when tinting?

I thought about tinting the front until I got my first windshield crack from a rock, and Im not willing to shell out $100.00 every time I have to fix or replace it.

Re: Does the windshield get removed when tinting?

I'm absolutely amazed that you guys with tinted windshields haven't been pulled over and ticketed by local authorities. What do you do when you happen to see a cop coming towards you? - pretty hard to hide something like that! I know for a fact that the fines for front tint on any glass is pretty stiff , as well as you're made to have it removed at your expense! - I'm speaking from experience...

Re: Does the windshield get removed when tinting?

Fines for windshield tint can be far worse than fines for driver and passenger doors. But it does look nice when everythings blacked out! I used to have everything blacked out on my previous car but got tired of getting pulled over, removing film, and re-tinting.

Also, I used to run a tint shop for a few years so I can tell you that 99.9% of the time, an experienced tinter should never have to remove any glass or panels to apply the tint. Some shops like to pull the door panels but I disagree with that method. Its not necessary. A good tinter can get it just as clean without doing that. Some cars require the back deck to be pulled out to get behind the brakelight if its too tight to get a tinting tool behind. I still tint all of my own vehicles and friends vehicles, and the FJ is a straight forward and easy car to tint. No tinter should have an issue. Just my .02

Re: Does the windshield get removed when tinting?

Hmm... I just realized that during certain times of the day even at 7% on the driver and passenger side doors people can still see inside. I wonder if doing the windsheild will make it darker or should I just double up on the 7%?

With safety aside, tinting the windshield will definitely make it darker. The more light you block out from entering the car, the darker your tint will look. Tint will reflect light from whichever side the light is coming from. Doubling tint will also darken it, but it usually voids the warranty.

You could try a neutral colored film on the windshield. 3M makes a nice looking neutral film you could get in 50% that doesn't have the smoke look so you're less likely to get pulled over. Its has a sublte reflective look, not like cheap chrome. It still cuts out a good amount of light, heat, and UV. It's actually made for commercial and residential glass so it is difficult to heat shrink on curved automobile glass, but it can be done.

If the tint is done right, they will remove your doors panels for the front windows.

I had a strip put along the top of my windshield, 4 inches from the top which is what is legal in California. I instantly hated it because driving through hilly San Francisco became even tougher when I went down a step decline, it cut off too much of my vision. The contrast between the clear windshield and the tint also gave me a bit of a headache. I ended up ripping it off, wasting $100 at the same time. Just my two cents so you have all the info. I did tint the sides windows (which is illegal I guess) and I don't regret that at all, love it!
$100 bucks for the front strip. i paid $280 to have the entire vehicle done including the entire winshield. on my last silverado, also with 50% on the entire windshield is was $108 out the door.

i have 5% over the rear tint, 15% on the front windows, and 50% on the windshield. you can hardly see in. and it is way too dark at night to look out of the sides. i am tempted to have it redone in 50%.

I used to charge $25 for just a front strip. It only takes 15 min and hardly any film.

I had the front windows and all of the back windows done with Solar Gard 7% for $125.00. This was the 7th car I took to him so he gave me a break.

The reason I'm asking because it was overcast today and when you look into the car you can still see the silhouette of people. I want it totally dark where you can't see anyone inside.

I may go with the lightest shade on the front windshield then decide whether or not I want to double up on the side windows.
