I also love the windshield tint it is amazing. I have light tint on the windshield and yes it is illegal technically any tint on the front three windows the driver passenger and the windshield besides a three inch strip at the top of the windshield but I not sure if you are even allowed to do the strip on the FJ because if you do a three inch it would take up a good portion. So windshield tint illegal but I guess it depends on how much you drive and how much you feel you need it. if you do tint your windshield defiantly do not remove it that is ridiculous and if you decide to tint the windshield so you don’t get pulled over ever time you drive your FJ go a little lighter on the side windows because it make the inside of your vehicle look very dark!
I've had my old Honda's front windshield tinted and they apply it just like they would any other window. There is no removal of the windshield.
I'm still debating on whether or not I want the front windshield tinted. On our FJ's we sit about 2.5-3 feet from the windshield so we're not constantly getting baked. However at certain hours during the day when I drive into the sun I find myself getting cooked.
This is what my car currently looks like.

P.S. As for those complaining its illegal. I find it worth paying the $10.00 fine every couple of years to have the protection and privacy of dark tint.
The only setback that in my experience with tint on the front windshield is that all of dust, rock nicks, and dead bugs show up much faster. Moreover, its distracting for the first couple of weeks because you can see ripples in the tint where the installer had used a heat gun. It eventually fades away though.
If the tint is done right, they will remove your doors panels for the front windows.
I had a strip put along the top of my windshield, 4 inches from the top which is what is legal in California. I instantly hated it because driving through hilly San Francisco became even tougher when I went down a step decline, it cut off too much of my vision. The contrast between the clear windshield and the tint also gave me a bit of a headache. I ended up ripping it off, wasting $100 at the same time. Just my two cents so you have all the info. I did tint the sides windows (which is illegal I guess) and I don't regret that at all, love it!
