Not sure why you heard a crack. It's just a sheet metal joint. Once the liner wore through the joint did slice my tires, I used a ball peen hammer and just pounded it down towards the inside.
Why did you remove the fender well liner in the first place?

I noticed the same sharp looking "tabs" after removing the rear flaps as well. Also looked like a tire hazard to me as well. I took the dremel to it and smothed them out.

The pop u heard was prob. a plastic clip. Theres a few in that area and pop out with a slight pull.
My bushwhacker flares covered that tab and gave me the same clearance as removing the stock flares.
