I'll take a shot at answering my own question - is it the risk of drawing too much juice? Would the 55w be that much of an additional load?

Yep, the option of activating the light . . . . or
not, was the impetus for wiring it independently.
And yes, an additional 55 watt light sharing same circuit with the existing reverse light, would be pushing the limits.
