Re: Best Bike Rack for FJ

How many bikes??? Thule and Yakima make good ones. I like the Thule (pronounced Too-lee) a little bit better than the Yakima. Seems to have a better layout to it. At least it did on the ones i looked at when i was at REI.

p.s. What roof rack do you have? The OEM toyota one, Old Man Emu, or what?

Re: Best Bike Rack for FJ

I have a Yakima ROC series rack that is about 6 years old. It holds 4 bikes tightly, folds down so you can access the rear cargo area and obviously mounts on the hitch. I also purchased an optional rack for skis that I use on it during the winters. I purchased it at specialty store (a chain I think) called Rack and Road, and they still service it. (Needs new elastic straps to hold bikes in place).

Don't forget locks to secure your bikes also.

I have a Thule that goes in the hitch I think it is the T2, you can get it for 2 or four bikes. Sorry I don't have any pictures. Just go on their web site.

Re: Best Bike Rack for FJ

Hands down the Thule T2. Not Cheap, But "The Best":

It loads VERY quickly, carries any style of bike, be it 45lb Downhill Racing Mountain Bike, with 3" wide tires, a kids 20" tire bike, or a 14 lb Road Bike.
I've had 4 "Big Bikes" on my FJ, and it's totally stable.
flips up vertical when not in use, and drops down enough to get the back open completely with no bikes on, or enough to pull out a bag or two even with bikes on. It's heavy, so I actually pull mine off if I know I'm not going to be needing it. One 3/4" bolt secures it to the receiver. I have the two bike version, but a friend has the 2 bike add-on, which I can use as needed. Locking can be done by built in locks, or a simple cable threaded through the receiver mount.
Here's a poor picture of mine with my bike after a muddy race. You can see the 2 locks...

Thule T2. It is a great rack. It folds up nicely and clears the back tire. It is not cheap, but very stable when hauling bikes.

Re: Best Bike Rack for FJ

Currently using Thule 912 Roadway for 4 bikes. It's a flip down, but rear door only opens 3/4 of the way. I choose this rack because i didnt want to use my roof rack for snowboard. So i got this also with my bike rack:

Thule

It's the 987xt-Hitch Ski/Snowboard. Also i notice on some bikes like my Santa Cruz Bullet ( http://bikemag.com/freshproduce/bullet-3-4.jpg ) The rear suspension get in the way so i have to mount it on the buttom bar. But its it's easy to get this rack on CL for a good price, I got mine for 80 with a Thule hitch lock..... Just have to be patient.
