Re: Blacking out side mirrors

Thanks for the comments. When I did my front Toyota emblem, I removed the bezel and the grill. The emblem has plastic studs that have been melted on the back of the grill to hold on the emblem. So I desided to mask of the grill with tape and used a good set of razor knifes to trim it out. Took me about 30 minutes to trim out. Do a search and you' ll find a few post with the bezel mods. I did a thread on it also. Have fun I hope this helps.

Re: Blacking out side mirrors

This is a great post, I hadn't seen a mirror painting post that was as well photo documented as this one, this is my next mod, thanks!

I didn't like the Flat Black look so I went with Satin Black, blends better with the black plastic on the FJ(I think).
I agree. I was going to use the flat black as well, but went with the Satin / Glossy paint. Really does blend better IMO.

Re: Blacking out side mirrors

Hey what's up man? i was wondering if it is required to do anything more than just spray the mirrors? i haven't paint any mirrors before so i dont know anything about these things. I'm planning to do my own blackout, but i dont know if i need anything else than just a can of satin black spray?? Any recommendations to keep in mind when i do it?? thanks!

Re: Blacking out side mirrors

You'll more than likely need some sandpaper & blue painters tape.

Re: Blacking out side mirrors

It shouldn't be too much work if you leave the side mirror casing on, just remove the glass mirror and paper the FJ. I plan on popping a bright PIA in the there anyway.

Just make sure you either use a good adhesive, or use paint designed for plastic. I just used krylon fusion for plastic in satin, and so far so good. I used about 4 coats. I didn't use clear because I could only find matt finish. It might be ok, but I wasn't sure.

I also painted over the black part of the mirror just to be sure that the 2 sides looked the same.
