OEM Roof Rack Accessories and Build Ups

Just finished my build and want to utilize my OEM Roof Rack as the funds have been exhausted on the build. I know that some of you out there have done some pretty extensive upgrades to the original rack and was wondering if anyone might share some pics. Think of doing the Salt Lake Rail run coming up and want to make sure I've got some spare gas and other supplies up top. Ideas? Suggestions? Pictures?

Thanks in advance.

Since I'm limited on time at the moment, I will just suggest you look through the build threads. You'll get lots of good ideas in a short time.

Been around the forum for quite a while. That was the first thing I did and surprisingly... not that much info on the OEM Roof Rack build ups. Seems that after speaking with Larry over at Dirty Parts today, there are "PLASTIC" plates attached between the roof and the mounts for the OEM rack. NOT GOOD! Especially if you want to mod up the rack in order to haul gas and other supplies. Very discouraging as the only real safe thing to transport on the OEM rack would be a couple of surfboards, a Mt. Bike, Kayak and other "light" fun stuff. Oh yea, the annual Xmas Tree is a good use for it!!!

"other "light" fun stuff"
Or . . .
A couple hundred pounds of stuff leaving college in a Platypus bag, and drive 1000 miles home at 75mph.

Try it before being critical, you might be surprised - and there are ton of threads on the plastic parts in the OEM rack.

Re: OEM Roof Rack Accessories and Build Ups

last year when I still had my stock rack I went to death valley with four 5gl jerry cans up top and after a few whoops the cross bars snapped and inverted my roof! after that run I invested in a stronger rack. most of my Mods are after something happened

Here is my set up. I know it's not set up for an expedition but it holds everything I need (for now)... bike, skis, hi-lift, ...

Thanks for this! I actually have the exact same bike rack only mine is the exact same color as my fj Voo Doo Blue (came that way). My whole thing here is... yes, there are plenty of posts about the plastic elements and strength of the OEM Roof Rack. That's great! There are plenty of posts about all of our set ups with the OEM Roof Rack. What I haven't seen is a post that has the insert basket and a way to carry gas. I've purchased extra OEM cross bars, the shovel, ax and High Lift mount that you purchase on EBay. I'm doing my best not to spend the $1300 for a Gobi Stealth and stay with the OEM for now. I just spent over $6500 on Tires, Wheels, ICON Suspension, Front Expedition One w/winch, rear Warn, all black mirrors, handles and grill as well as a new dual battery system! Any ideas on how to best set up the OEM Rack would be extremely and greatly appreciated! What works? What doesn't? What's reasonable? Or... do I just bite the bullet with the wife and get the damn GOBI!

Re: OEM Roof Rack Accessories and Build Ups

You can look at the Baja Rack. VERY reasonably priced!

I have been searching for a "safari basket" to fit inside my OEM roof rack. This is what I've come up with so far..... (I missed out on the whole Costco/Coleman closeout deal...)
