If you take a seat in the FJ, there is actually a fair amount of room on the drivers side to store stuff. Keep in mind this is not for big bulky bags but more for smaller radio pouches, sunglasses and Ipods etc.

We are building some prototypes of racks to cover the silver vertical area on each side. If there are enough people interested, I would be willing to do a small run of racks over the dash panel (as usual, would need 35-40 participants to do so).

Doc
Cool, but I was thinking about the large panel in front of the passenger, not necessarily just the silver portion, but I would like to see the those as well.

Edit: Oh wait, I just re-read this and I think we are saying the same thing.

Re: New! MPAC Straddle Prototype

always interesting with new products from a quality supplier, and I have the excellent MPAC rear door rack and the MPAC side panel rack.

But if am able to judge the pictures correctly, this idea I believe is not going to work out as even the smallest packs would be in the way of the driver's legs. I tried mounting a small dual battery monitor somewhere near there and I had to move it because you sometimes rest your legs there. It was really annoying to have anything take up that space.

But do correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe show some pictures with bags and how it would work with the legs of short and long people?

Anyway it won't work for me since I have two extra 12V jacks on the right side of the console that would be blocked by the device. But there are lots of other places in the FJ where your metal working skills could be put to use making some useful brackets and mounts for the incredible amount of STUFF we all like to cram into our beloved FJs

Point well taken, Once we get the prototype finished, I will load up some different pouches and see what we can get into it without becoming annoying.

I would anticipate that one would put smaller (narrower) items on the drivers side and bulkier stuff on the passenger side.

It may not be a matter of "how Much" can be put on the rack but rather "how important" the items on the rack are. I see this as the perfect place for the SPOT GPS locator or a life hammer as mentioned before.

Keep the comments coming!

Re: New! MPAC Straddle Prototype

That's AWESOME! Definitely need one for the MT. I just finally got a mobile HAM that I need to mount on the side of the console, not to mention a life hammer & some other accessories in a bag. TOO COOL!

Re: New! MPAC Straddle Prototype

This is a really cool idea!! if the price is in the range you are saying Id def be in for one! Id like to see a way to put a handheld CB on there, especially since I have been trying to find a way to mount mine in that area for about a year now

Re: New! MPAC Straddle Prototype

Another suggestion. Make sure the edges are lined with either plastic or better yet felt...or the console will get torn up fast due to vibration and ruin some folks resell value.

We will probably supply some felt pads to help protect the plastic for those who wish to use them.

Re: New! MPAC Straddle Prototype

perhaps a rough powder coating so as not to smear or leave fingerprints in such an area.

Since you are talking about the side vents on the dash what about a rack that would fit from the passenger vent over the front of the dash above the glove box to the center console. It would not interfere with the airbag and would be a great place for maps and the such.

As always you can put me down for one. Yet I will be outta country til next year.
