Can anything be done to improve roof rack?

I have been pondering what I could do to improve the functionality of the factory FJ roof rack.

I kind of thought about upgrading to one of the aftermarket racks, but they seem so costly, plus the hassle of R&Ring and the fact that I will likely get next to nothing for the factory rack has me wondering if I can improve the factory rack.

Specifically I would like to have a mesh floor. Seems that it would be pretty easy for someone to make one.

I would like to mount my Hi Lift to it, if I could find a SOLID mounting bracket for it and a good cover, as I dont want it to rust away.

What do you guys think?

There's lots of info on here you can find about this. I have the Fourtreks mounts for the hi-lift to the factory rack. They are about as solid as you can get. And about as expensive too. I bought mine used. ARB has a hi-lift cover.

Re: Can anything be done to improve roof rack?

The 4 treks mount looks nice. I notice on their page to buy it, it lists a FJ cruiser mount, but it lists a 2006-2007 FJ. Mine is an 08. Did they change the roof rack diameter or does their site just need upgrading?

Are there better mounts, value wise available? When I google it, I get tons of unrelated info and not much pertinent to what I am doing.

Roof rack diameters did not change so you'll be fine purchasing the FJ ones they have listed. Luke at Fourtreks is a great guy and an excellent product designer when it comes down to it.

Re: Can anything be done to improve roof rack?

You can do your own mounts just as sturdy for under $25.

Not as pretty but the price difference is a good start on another mod.

I did this and it is very solid almost 2 years later. I paid $25 with tax and I had a can of black paint laying around.

FJN- Thanks, that looks very interesting. The link for "more info" is dead though. Where are guys getting these? That is kind of what I am looking for. Something that will allow me to use the rack without toughing the actual roof.

I would love to just replace the factory rack with something more useful, and low profile, but damn! those nice racks are very expensive.

NEW! BajaRack for OEM FJ Cruiser Rack BR-TYFJOEMRCK

Just one of the retailers selling it online. Bajaracks website was to painful for me to search around on.
