Rust Mort, anyone heard of this?

Hello...

Bought my 2007 FJ Cruiser earlier this year in MA with 30k miles. Has a pretty good amount of surface rust, but nothing alarming as far as I can tell. I now live in Washington State and have found a place that will steam clean underneath and then apply a phosphoric acid based rust converter called Rust Mort. They do not do anything else, they just apply it, let it dry and thats that. No rinsing/scrubbing it off or top coating as I have found online with others who use it. Even the instructions say to top coat it.

The owner of the shop apparently has been doing this for 30 years and seems to really believe in this product, and other shops recommend him. But I haven't found any other examples online that follow his procedure for using it.

Can anyone add anything to this? I know this has been a nagging problem for many FJ owners, and it keeps me worrying way too much.

Thanks!

Re: Rust Mort, anyone heard of this?

Maybe you can call them and ask them if you haven't already.

If you're set on getting it done right (which you should) then politely ask them to do it as says and tell them that you'll compensate them for it.

I have not heard of Rust mort, however. I would assume that because he's highly recommended that he's doing something right.

Re: Rust Mort, anyone heard of this?

Rust Mort works great as long as there is still rust on the metal. It penetrates to the substrate and stops further rusting. I prefer the Rust Seal (39304) you can paint right over it. Also check out Rust Bullet.
ya, I have an FJ40.

Re: Rust Mort, anyone heard of this?

To update, I got it done. Costed 200 bucks and he pretty much sprayed the entire underbelly with Rust Mort, even the areas which had no rust. Looks like it worked pretty well. Still trying to figure out why I even had to do this for a 2007 model. Pathetic.

x2 on the rust seal...Ive used on my Jeep wrangler and worked great. I live in a rust infested coastland, so rust is a problem here.
