paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

So my car got keyed. and i got arround 1200 from the insurance. it is 900 at the shop to just paint where it was keyed. So now i am wondering... cause i want to black out my FJ... my wondering is what to black out in the paint booth and what to black out with line-x... or if i should even do the linex... To fully paint the entire car all black they guy quoted me 1800... so thats 900 outta pocket for me. do you think it would be more cost effective to line-x the roof and bumper flares and to just paint the handles and mirrors? give me your opinions/ pictures of anything related. thanks!

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

Linex won-t be any cheaper then paint...I know.
You linex to protect against tree branches or in your case, getting keyed. Linex'ing the roof, but not the truck makes no sense to me. I know a few have done it, but I just don't see the point.
1800 to paint an entire car is not bad. I paid 3500 for linex and I did all the prep work. Linex is not cheap.

id do the linex, with kevlar, on the roof...your handels, mirrors, and sliders, id just paint. they are easy to do, easy to touch up, looks great, and saves money...just my two cents

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

You would think the line-x on the roof would be pointless but i really use my roof. i love to get up ontop of the FJ. it is fun to monkey around ontop but sometimes i feel like i could hurt it. so that would be the plus to the line-x. I like your 2 cents.... But SwiCago..3500 for entire rig of Line-x... what do you think the roof cost was of that? if you were to guestimate.

I don't have a Line-x'ed roof myself (yet), however I've done the research...most guys on the forum paid $300-500 or so to do the roof.

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

i gave right at 650 for both, roof and rack...they were each 325..both required the same amount of material..i might have paid a little less then some because we use the linex company do alot of vehicles, so i dont pay retail, and it was tax exempt

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

I would think from the prospective of resale, you will get less if you linex the truck. Most of the public does not appreciate its qualities like we do. This coming from a guy who just painted his rig orange

I have seen Swicagos rig in person and it is well done. I agree with what he says about doing the roof as well. If money is an issue and you want true protection off road...I would do the lower 2/3 on the sides in Linex. I have seen this done on Grand Cherokees before and it really rocks (pun intended).

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

hahah i have thought about more linex on the sides... im not worried about the resale value... im driving my FJ till it dies... then im gonna revive it and drive it till it dies again... at which point it will sit in my garage...2 times dead as a trophy... Im not gonna have it as my sole driver for its 2 times death... but when i get out of college all my extra income is going into my FJ... i have thought about doing the doors in line-x and the roof as well... but that would have been nice if only the person who keyed my car had started at one door and gone to the next... instead they went from headlight to taillight... sooo that is where my problem comes... i may go for like a 6 in strip arround the entire car and go ahead and get all the plastic coated in the line-x... but ill have to think about it... i was quoted at 400 by line-x of arlington for the roof.... but ajstoy if you would tell me where you went... id much rather have people do a repeat of a prior job than my FJ being the first they have ever done...

Re: paint vs line-x or paint & line-x?

I've done 2/3 of mine and am very happy with it!Resale is not an issue with me either! The one thing I have found though is,I no longer hesitate to take a line that others avoid because they worry about "trail rash".I do however get alot of comments, some good and some bad so it really boils down to personal preference!
