Rear Fog Light?

Anyone have any good thoughts on how to mount the rear fog light for those of you who need to have one? Right now, the shop just mounted it under the rear bumper attached to the frame with a bracket, but that's just asking to get knocked off. I was thinking of trying to find a tow hitch mounted red light and use it and then just disconnect it when I need tow, but are there any more elegant solutions out there?

Re: Rear Fog Light?

You could try sending a PM to NSBCruiser. He made some sweet brackets for the OEM roof rack....

Re: Rear Fog Light?

Fourtreks makes a nice tube mount w/bracket for most racks/tubes. I'm very happy with mine.

Thanks for the props.

ND40oz here is what I did.

I found a Hella Matador Work Lamp on eBay, cheap. I installed it on the rear with a custom made bracket for the factory roof rack. The wiring is ran through the roof rack (like seen on all over this Forum).

The Matador has a built in switch on the lamp, I use that as a master on/off and I have a Tacoma Fog light switch for in cab control.

Switches - Top Row from right to left:
Fog Lights, Bumper Lights, Roof Lights, and Rear Work/Reverse Light

Matador Work Lamp

Switch on back of Hella Matador Work Lamp

Picture of the quick disconnect and grommet used for the roof rack. I used a trailer wire two pin connector.

The Hella Matador Work Lamp was really a good choice for my needs. The light pattern is very broad and bright. It is a flood lamp, I was considering installing two but one is more than enough. With the way it is mounted it can still swivel and tilt using the original bracket that came with it and the bracket I made for the roof rack.

I wired it up to three relays. One relay lets me use the work lamp whenever I need it using a Tacoma Fog Light switch, and the other two relays automatically activate the work lamp if the headlights are on and the FJ is in reverse, these two are wired to a older style Tacoma on/off switch (so I can turn on or off the reverse light function).

I found this on a Land Rover forum and modified it to work with my application. I turned out fantastic.

I know, I know... Land Rover, but I sold my 2002 Discovery II for my FJ... I still have a soft spot for Land Rovers

Here is the link, it has a good write up explaining everything.

Re: Rear Fog Light?

Ah that looks great, unfortunately I should have mentioned the UK regs state that it can't be any higher then 1 meter off the ground.

Rear Fog Light Requirement

But the trailer disconnect is great, I found this one at harbor freight and may try going that route, don't want to do anything that can't be undone too easily.

The switch is installed next to the clutch cancel switch up front, but I'm going to buy the OEM fog light switch to put there, should just be able to swap them out pretty easily.

Re: Rear Fog Light?

Here's what they've done to my vehicle here in France to pass it. I s'pose it's the same as what they do in the UK?

Yup looks about the same, except they put the fog lamp on the right. Have you had any issues scraping it at all?

Had to get running lamps mounted on the front too in the grill since they need parking lamps that are white, put some little LEDs in there. Might try to get a fab fours or arb bumper shipped over since they have lights in them as well.

Re: Rear Fog Light?

Well, I've had no problem with it yet, knocked it a few times, had no issues with regard to breaking it....

I have to take issue with the law demanding that we change red turning lights to white. Most US vehicles are red.....they make us go a looooong way to change vehicles to EU compliance. I saw Cadalac's here in france, french made with red breaking lights flashing just like the US, and they were passed road legal here. GM vehicles are the same, saw yukons which were still with their red turning lights. And yet they make us run rings around them to get our vehicles compliant with European law. They didn't pass my vehicle due to the driver side mirror being 2mm out when they mounted camera's inside the vehicle to measure visibility. Pffffffff.......

I know I'm digressing, I'm just annoyed with 'em. You had any problems?

Didn't have too many with the FJ, nothing like mounting cameras inside to check visibility, jeez, glad they didn't have to do that. I'll tell you though, roundabouts are fun in the FJ, half the time you hope to have a passenger that can tell you if you're in the clear. Being on the left hand side of the road and on the left hand side of the car really makes it hard to see oncomming cars from the entry point before yours on the roundabout.

I am worried about the MDX. It's rear tail lights are LED and they also serve as the turn signal. When I was talking to the shop that does the conversion, he said they don't require reverse lamps here, so he's thinking they can remove the reverse lamps and put in amber lights in the only white area on the light. Hopefully that works, gotta do a rear brake light for it too though...

Re: Rear Fog Light?

Right, the Acura MDX, a fine vehicle! I have imported 2 vehicles, but I've avoided importing vehicles with LED rear lights for exactly this problem. The people who helped me with the conversion in the UK (specialised shipping ltd of Woking) told me to avoid at all cost anything like Escalade, etc with LED's coz they have nothing but problem converting it to house an amber turn light. Eg:-

4x4 Cadillac Escalade essence 2009 CLIM en vente sur eBay.fr (fin le 29-juin-09 15:29:33 Paris)
Photo Gmc Yukon 5.3 V8 320 Sle Bva 2007

These vehicles have already been passed here and they have red turn lights. I do not know what to believe, they seem to change the law to suit themselves.

Who's doing the conversion work for your Acura? How do you get your hands on a certificate of non conformity? Do you write up to Nissan for that? Here it's 6 months to pass a vehicle, and if you don't have 1 document they want your stuck......

The camera senario shocked me too with regards to the FJC. They fitted camera's in so that they could measure to the mm how much visibility there was on the mirrors. Had to have a split mirror installed.

I've had my FJC taken away from me since Februrary, I'm gutted. Should be back here soon...only drove her one weekend.....and that was down to Cannes and St Tropez. I quickly learnt NOT to drive her through narrow streets......I was a nervous wreck after driving her accross busy French round abouts! Even with a passanger!
