Lightbulb Why all time 4 wheel drive with stick?

Hello All..Well this past Saturday I bouyght an FJ but they are looking for the color and spec I want. i really am a stick guy but dont like the mpg loss due to the all time 4 wheel. Any idea why they didnt give you the 2 wheel/4 wheel drive option on the stick? Im torn between the 2...i dotn plan to do any serious off roading but I love driving a stick. I do a lot of highway miles though and losing 2 miles per gallon adds up...Can anyone give me soem feedback advice? Should I go automatic or manual?

I got a manual trans because I cannot stand AT, but I don't commute heavily in the FJ. I don't really know what to tell you... I don't see the point of a 2WD FJ; I'd just get a Prius (hey wait, we have one). [no flames, please!]

So are all you manual T drivers keeping in H as it says to when you're on the road? Pardon my ignorance, but what if you just left it in N (the 4wd stick, not the gears duh)? With the Tacoma I could be in 2WD or 4WD, and I haven't read the FJ manual fully yet.

Don't know why Toyota does what they do but .....

If your a stick guy like I am, get the stick. It's a very smooth shifting trans and is fun to drive. Still can't get used to that 6th gear though. I'm running 89 octane and all my driving is around town. I'm averaging 18 mpg. I am not a heavy footed driver though. This is my first 4x4 and it was nice having the truck in fulltime 4x4 mode this past winter.

Yes, leave it in Hi all the time while on dry road. Hmm, never tried putting it in "n"

Re: Why all time 4 wheel drive with stick?

Gear ratios are different in the MT thus the more likely less gas milage. In either case I would not put the FJ into the "fuel economy" class.

second that. Don't buy this truck if gas mileage is a concern. You will be getting 250 miles out of a tank of gas.

n = neutral, and it is just that.

Well gas mileage isnt a concern per say but hey if you can get a few extra miles per gallon why not take it...I guess thats my point....Thanks for the feedback though.....I test drove the stick and thought it was very smooth

Re: Why all time 4 wheel drive with stick?

I agree that if you prefer driving an MT then get that the fj's is amazing. I don't object to doing what you can to get the best mileage you can with your vehicle of choice, I tried different grades of gas and gas stations and found I get the best mileage at the local shell on 87. however if mileage is in the first 5 things on your priority list get something else. fj is for camping, offroading, bad weather, cargo space, reliability, crash safety, uniqueness. that list is in no order and not all inclusive but you get my point. I looked at all of those things before I bought my fj, I only looked at mileage out of curiosity before the I put down the money on mine.
