FOr reasons unspecified I need to remove the tail lights so I can make a mod. How can remove the tail light assembly. I have got as far as removing the two bolts from the inside but there seems to be one more step. Anyone know what that next step is?

ha. There is actually a third bolt, closer towards the front of the truck. You have to remove the side panel to access it. A month ago I got in a tight spot and it ripped mine off, so I had to replace it...thats how I know.

yep, and a lot has to come off first before you can remove the side panel... it's a PITA actually...

I just installed tail light guards and had to access all three nuts. Once I found it, the third was the easiest; the only one I could get a deep socket on.
Not anything much in the way , unless you have a sub, maybe. You can see the nut through the rear vertical slots where the cover side tabs go in . You just pop off the lower panel , reach down, under and up and fit the socket on.
The other two I had to use an open wrench.
You don't remove the whole inside wall or anything, just pop open the access panels.
