Pieman, I'm new as well & been looking to do the same thing. The best way to see what other people have done is search for "CB mount" or something rather in the search box. Last night I saw a vertical approach mounted near the rearview mirror - and today I saw one mounted inside the drivers side glove box.
I like the look of that mounting location but would be concerned about the lessoned passenger leg room (and safety issue) plus the long reach from the driver side.
Has it worked out for you so far?

I have ran it this way since '99.
Had the same Cobra 29 in my '91 4Runner.
Really at the angle it is at it does not interfere one bit with passengers.
I have never had anyone hit it or come close to it.
Long reach is not an issue either.
One the CB is turned on to channel four for a 4x4 run, the mic goes up into my dash mount making it easy to reach, or I just lay the mic on the seat.
I see you are in Renton.
I work at a Boeing site in Renton, not the main plant.
Swing by sometime during the day if you are in the area, and I can show it to you.
If you are ever out not to far from Bob Bridge Toyota (my job site is close) PM me for my cell # and I can show you the rig.
