I haven't had that problem, however they are designed to hold you in place when you're off-camber (the same as if you rolled the FJ) as a safety feature. It can be annoying when on the trail and you want to have the passenger hop out and spot you.
But welcome to the Forum!
and for the record, I do love my FJ.

To be continued...
That's what the service writer said when I brought it back. They told me when I pick it up on Tuesday they were giving me a voucher for a tank of gas!
I can't wait to experience the FJ off road. So far all I got to experience was the sound system with the subwoofer (package 2) and if that is any indication it's going to be great.
Now I'm going to surf the site and look for some accessories. I'd like a brush guard or bull bar for the front as I'm going to be going through some highly vegetative areas. Unfortunately not too many mountains in my area...northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin.
Now all you have to do is get a lift kit, wheels and tires, rock rails, front and rear bumpers with a winch, skid plates, alter your lighting, add accessory lighting, replace all of your speakers and DVD/Navigation/GPS head unit, add several amps and lots of wiring, get a reverse camera with LED lighting, remove seats carpet and the rest of the interior and sound deaden the whole thing with Dynamat and Insulation, then add Wet Okole seat covers, get a supercharger (TRD or URD), install a Cold Air Intake, install an aftermarket cat back exhaust, get a URD Y-pipe and install it, don't forget the Doug Thorley Headers, buy a scan gauge, add a spare battery, airhorns of course, monitors for the head rests, add a couple of kill switches, get a bandi mount and CB, then and only then will you be able to comfortably enjoy your FJ and wander about which mods you would like to add as a luxury as all of the above is a must have.
I don't think I'm going to be doing too many mods other than the brush guard, (OK maybe some lights). I've done my share of mods over the years. I don't know what the average age of the FJ drivers are, but I'm guessing that I am about twice that. I'm not going to say exactly how old I am but my first car was a 1955 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, and although I bought it used, it wasn't that old!
Anyhow I have a VW W12 Phaeton as my main vehicle which was owned by an exec at VW in Auburn Hills Michigan that I did a few mods on. Although they stopped selling them in the US in 2006, I can say it is one hell of a bargain for anyone looking for an uber luxury sedan. Ones are coming off lease now and are going through the auctions from the high 20's (V8's) to the high 30's (W12s) although the W12s are pretty rare. Only about 600 in the entire country. They are all-wheel drive and allow you to raise the suspension through a gas strut system but I couldn't bear to take it off road!
Thanks again for the welcome and I'll report back as soon as I get a chance to put some miles on the FJ.
