New from southern NH

I am entertaining the idea of acquiring an FJ Cruiser for use as a go-anywhere comms platform. Some radio-related events with which I have wanted to be involved have required travel on rough terrain and/or through deep snow. I'd like to operate on HF, perhaps with a deployable roof-mounted multiband vertical, and having a mobile 5/8-wave tribander affixed up top as well for daily use. The interior and dash area appear to lend themselves well to mounting multiple radios.

I understand these get 12-14MPG, but based on reading am gravitating toward a 2010+ FJ Cruiser with dual VVT-i, 6-speed RA61F transmission, and a slight lift. Seems as if the 4L 6cyl putting out only moderate power would be good for longevity. Here is roughly what I am picturing, minus the snorkel and large roof lights: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com...8cdb556869.jpg I don't intend to play U-boat commander in my vehicle or go on excursions specifically to go 4-wheeling.

Re: New from southern NH

Welcome! Ive met guys who have like 5 antennas on their FJ for all their radio equipment so I know the FJ can be an awesome platform for that! Especislly with a dual battery setup.

Good luck in your search!

Welcome from VT! That FJ you posted a link to is one of the more heavily modified rigs on the forum, so if you feel an interest in going that direction it might mean you're about to acquire a second hobby You can check out his build thread - see Joeisip811(DAPURAK) build thread. GL!

Welcome from the UK

There are lots of voids in the rear to mount units with remote heads which keeps the dask clean. I only have a single quad band unit mounted in the rear but there's space for more. The interior is relatively easy to route cables around without dismantling everything.

Thanks. I found the Joeisip811 (DAPURAK) Build Thread and saw the mods were somewhat extensive. I like the Road Armor bumper and brush guard, winch, Bushwacker flares, some variation of the roof rack and basket, the Expedition One rear bumper, and the lift (with all that entails including a larger wheel-tire combo) but would likely want to forego much of the rest.

That was my understanding. I like the idea of not having to take the entire interior out to route cables.
