Southern Utah is also lovely on a mountain bike or via hiking boots. sorry!!! As a direct descendent of the original Mormon pioneers, I would not mind seeing at least part of that land protected. It truly is one of the most beautiful places in the U.S.
oooh, I can feel those flames a comin'.....
to bad under the wilderness act a mountain bike would be against the law. I am all for protecting the land but what these people want to do is just stupid, I have never been to Moab but I plan to go this summer and I can't help but think that most 4 wheelers take care of it as it is some of the best wheeling in the country and most beautiful and no one wants to loose it.

I hope mlovett has indeed signed off and going back to work, because she is a nice person who probably has been in Northern California a little too long.
And having spent 10 years living there myself, I am glad and relieved she is still calling herself an American.
No you don't. I don't think you should stop until you get Dick to accept your invitation to go experience Moab the same way everyone here has or wishes to someday... provided his legislation doesn't pass.
Don't forget the plastic bags that I'm sure he'll want to use in picking up any trash in the area. Whoops. I meant paper bags.

If it's "protected" how can it be enjoyed? Only by the able bodied who can hike in? What about those on Horse, is it OK for them? What about Mtn bikers?
Each recreating group has an impact. But why prevent all from enjoying as they have?

When they shut it it's not just the hiking but getting to the hiking. Not all of us have a month off to get in and out of these areas. How about the handicapped, how will they enjoy it? Once it's shut to vehicles how long before your boots get more restricted. Usually they go hand in hand. Think this one through. No flames yet lol.
Well thanks, Moab. Those who "know" me on here know that I am pretty outdoorsy. I am not against offroading (or I wouldn't be going next month in Tahoe), but I do get mad when people do it irresponsibly. I don't think all 9 million acres need be closed to 4x4, but maybe some of it. The more fragile areas. I dunno... if you ask me, ALL of southern Utah should be National Park land!

I respectfully submit that the Mormon Pioneers were allowed to cross the land freely as well.
Yeah, barely... they weren't very welcome in other states... Illinois comes to mind. THey finally apologized just a couple of years ago! Mormons were allowed to cross freely as long as they kept heading WEST. hahaha
Mormons were allowed to do many things back then, including polygamy.
Since I went to public school, I was taught from day one how evil mankind (and Americans) are. And that nature is under imminent destruction merely from the presence of human beings.
As we all know, this message plays well with the very young. You need some years to recognize that it is a power grab just like any other. To not be in denial, but to question assertions with harmful intent such as these.
Recently, a German environmentalist requested that Knut the baby polar bear be euthanized due to his contact with humans at the Berlin zoo. This is extreme, but I can see a direct parallel in closing off Moab.
Those of us here on the forum LOVE the outdoors, you especially. Look at the efforts of highbeams and the Adventure4X4 group to clean up places like Calico. Do any of us want to see it destroyed? No! Do we destroy it? No! Has anybody harmed it? No!
mlovett you will agree that Green-ness is not an absolute truth. Like any other religion it can be abused and put to use in politics.

I gotta stop myself... sorry.
Yes, I am from what used to be conservative San Diego, was once a Republican (until I realized that I was too poor to be one LOL), and am now middle of the road thanks to the Bay Area. It's not a bad place to be. I don't like extremism in any form. And you are dam right I am American -- my family has been here since 1750!!
