Maintenance TechThis forum is for discussion of all aspects of maintenance that should be performed on the FJ Cruiser to keep it operating at maximum efficiency.
I took out the hex bolt. I know just enough to know that I shouldn't need an Allen wrench to change the oil. Still, only 2 qts came out and it looked like oil to me, dirty.
Followleader, It would take quite an ass to kick a man while he's down regarding my situation. Obviously I know I screwed up. Thanks to everybody for being helpful!

Sounds like your all set.......
BTW how many miles on your FJ, just asking as you said the oil looked dirty....
You ultimately made the correct call. I agree it probably does not need to be flushed, but that may be the closest thing in the book , to describe how to charge for it.
I think someone from Toyota corp should make a revision on the transmission plug to where it is a unique tool to open it. Or to label/ engrave around the area, so it can't happen as often as it does.
When you get under the truck, the reference to how far the drain plug is back, doesn't make sense, because the oil drain plug is so far forward. This is really an easy mistake, especially if you are fairly new to the oil change process on the FJ . Every time I get under the truck, without skids on, I snicker and think how easy it would be to make this mistake
Damn, now that you mention that, I wonder if I over reacted? I did not realize there were so many qts of tran fluid in a car. I only took 2 out! (Though it had stopped draining completely). Although I will say it looked very dirty, though keep in mind I obviously don't know a lot about cars, ha. Only has 46k on it. Peace of mind I guess. I still have what came out at home. I may take a pic and post later.
Just talked to the service rep and he says no way to actually measure the amount in it, but I told him I was positive it was exactly 2 quarts. He acted like I shouldn't risk it.
Sounds like a blessing in disguise thing. You take out the hex bolt, you should most definitely see 4 quarts! Mine was still pretty darned red when I drained my pan for the first time around 60K miles. (I bought it at 54)
Sounds like it could have actually used a nice full flush!

Not sure this was said earlier, but i did the same thing 2weeks ago. I mistakingly drained the tranny instead of the oil. You would have to go to the dealer to get it filled again bcz its a sealed tranny. Only the dealer could do it. The tranny fluid has to b heated at a certain degrees before u could fill it. It costed me 359.00 just to put it back in. Dont drive on it too long. If u do, ure going to need a new transmission. Good luck!!

That is completely false. It is very simple to take out the fill plug, and put in new fluid. Just need to get a little screw on tube to put on the fluid bottle since it is too high in the trans tunnel to pour right in.

Most of this is not true
It's not a sealed unit. There are actually fill ports on the side of the transmission. It just does not have a dipstick tube , so it's not as easy to service as just throwing another quart in.
The part about the temperature to check it's level is actually true. There are threads here that explain the process of doing your own transmission service. I just wanted to clarify that the dealer is really just throwing scare tactics at you to have your service done through them. I'm not saying it's a bad idea to have them service it ,but it's not the absolute must, they preached to you about
Update: Im back in action, three hundred something $ later. The guy says the WS tran fluid will turn dark and that it's not indicative of needing changing, which is a bummer because I wanted to believe that I at least accomplished something.
I'm still going to change my own oil next time! I only need about 20 self oil changes to recoup my losses, haha.
