Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

This is pretty embarrassing but I'm seriously worried so oh well....thought I would change my oil yesterday and I'm pretty sure I drained my transmission fluid and not my oil. I drained the big black pan behind the skid plate. Only 2 quarts came out which was my first signal something wasn't right. Then after I added oil, I checked it and it was way too high. I told myself nothing was wrong and drove 30 miles to work this morning. Nothing felt off while driving but I just had this feeling something wasn't right so did some research and figured it out.

I have already gone 30 miles. There is an oil change place about 2 miles away and I'm sure they can add the tran fluid as they do flushes, etc. I'd rather avoid the embarrassment of towing my car from work parking lot but I don't want to mess up my baby either. If I already made it 30, would 2 more hurt?

Yes, I'm an idiot.

Can I add some myself without moving the car or is that hard to do?

Its tough to get to the fill point- you need a pump device to get to the filler.

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

Well, go for the jiffy lube or not? It drove fine to get here.

Did I even drain the transmission? I drained something...it wasn't red, looked like oil to me.

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

jiffy lube may not be your answer
I don't believe they will touch the FJ transmission. Even if they offered to fill it, do they have the correct fluid? The special trans fluid is the WS
I would have it towed to Toyota. You aren't the first one to do this . Did you drain out the extra oil?

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

I will call ahead and check. There is another shop right next to it that is more of a traditional mechanic shop.

Extra oil still in it. All of this just hit me when I got to work.

Are you an Auto or a Manual transmission? When you were changing the oil. did you go thru the hole in the skid plate?

Ooops I guess I assumed it was an auto. He described a black pan behind. Good point

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

I think you can tear up your engine running with too much oil, you should just bite the bullet and tow to toyota. Good luck

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

Like stated above it takes special fluid that I would almost bet they wont have. I'd be more concerned with the oil overfill...did you add a whole additional 5.5 qts!?

Re: Help! Think I drained Tran fluid

Auto. The pan has 2 bolts, one "regular"'and one round with a hole for an Allen wrench. It is behind the skid plate, not under it. Very easy to get to, a little too easy.

The nearest Dealer is 5.1 miles, 11 minutes away. Tow it or go for it? Already has 30 miles on it.

Towing may be overkill but why risk it?
