Re: JBA Exhaust Installation Help

I think I'm going to install my JBA exhaust tomorrow morning. Any suggestions or recommendations?

I know I may run into bolts that won't come off. Also, is it necessary to disconnect the battery?

No need to disconnect the battery. Try to budge the two bolts connecting the muffler and the tailpipe, it is right by the rear axles. If you can't loosen them at all, get a hacksaw or sawzall and cut that sucker out. Do that first before taking the rest of the exhaust off the hangers and such.

Re: JBA Exhaust Installation Help

So I take a look under my FJ and it looks like there are parts on the intermdediate pipe that's welded on.

Also, the 2 bolts between the tailpipe and exhaust look like they have some type of putty or weld on top.

Any idea what I should do.

Re: JBA Exhaust Installation Help

Nevermind, the nuts are welded on. I should be trying to untighten the bolts.

Man there's not a lot of room to work with on the bolts between the tailpipe and exhaust. All of the bolts seem to be impossible to take off! I'm soaking them in liquid wrench right now.

Re: JBA Exhaust Installation Help

I let some penetrant soak in for over 5 hours. Nuthin. Don't bother. Just get the hacksaw or sawzall and rip it out.

Yeah, all 4 bolts are tight. I can see how the tailpipe can be hacksawed and pulled off, but what about the intermediate pipe? I'm not really sure where to saw at.

ooh. the two bolts with the springs are seized? don't hack that pipe off. use a breaker bar with those and give it a good wack. you'll need those bolts and springs.

thank you! i'm if it was a breaker bar, but i ended up using a socket wrench with a longer handle. at first i thought i broke it when i heard a loud snap, but it was only the bolt coming loose.

how can i tell if there are leaks? by looking at where the tailpipe is connected to the middle pipe and muffler, it looks like there could possibly be leaks. it's that visible to me. (sorry if i hijacked the thread)

While you still have it up on ramps, I have found that the easiest way to find small leaks is to put the goopy stuff you put on gas line joints to check for leaks. It's a gell and acts better than just soapy water. It stays in place longer and makes obvious bubbles. Of course if the gap is large enough, you can just run you hand near the joints with the engine running and you will feel the exhaust coming out.
