Re: MAF Sensor Maintenance

I have been running an AFE with the dry pro guard filter for a year. With the dust we must deal with in SO-CAL, I have been checking the intake all the way to the throttle body after every desert trip, to this day there has been very little to no dust past the dry AFE. Wrigman I too ran K&N's in all my desert race bikes with great success, but I cleaned them after each and every race, and would toss them after each season. I do have a ProGuard 7 oiled AFE, but have been afraid to use it because of the sensor location.

I don't think the cyclone will be possible with the snorkel.
It would be straightforward to adapt the snorkel outlet to the pre-filter's inlet. I had to build a fenderwell "scoop" for the inlet of my prefilter so I trimmed the rubber flange on the prefilter and modified a PVC 90 deg street elbow. (example below)

The bigger quesion would be if Larry would really want to deinstall the CAI box

Re: MAF Sensor Maintenance

A good idea after you oil your drop in K&N (or similar) is to lay it out in sun the for a few hours while it is wrapped in a CLEAN (NO fabric softner, etc) %100 cotton towel. You will see that the towel turns pink/red (color of the oil) yet the filter has still got its oily color. I even take a second clean towel and let it sit for a few hours to confirm I have sucked off any excess oil. Have done this for years and have never had any MAF sensor problems. Just before install I take a can of compressed air (like for computers) and lightly go over both sides in case an little threads from the towels wanted to stick around (a little bit of OCD, I know).

Re: MAF Sensor Maintenance

It can cause loss of HP, poor gas mileage, and loss of your rig running. I run a K&N and like it but I dont run in dusty conditions that often. When I clean mine I knock off the extra and wipe around the edges, no problems to date. I did clean my throttle body at 25k and a decent amount of black carbon/dirt came out and I seem to be getting better MPG. When I bought the BG throttle body cleaner there was a can of MAF sensor cleaner right next to it that I almost purchased. Looks like I will be headed back to make that purchase. A clean intake is imparative!

But theres still the problem with a hole in the bottom of the cyclone.. correct?

If water can get it, it will get in.

Re: MAF Sensor Maintenance

After the Mojave trip, I was honestly down to about 7 mpg.
I cleaned the MAF Sensor, and I'm back up to normal.

Hole? No open holes.

There is a twist off rubber "thingy" (dirt collector) that has these thin "lips" on it that appear to close tight with engine vacuum. The gap is paper thin and apparently to let water drain out. Easily sealed if needed.

Oh ok. I thought there was like an escape hatch for the dirt that was pushed out.

Man, that avatar is creeping me out. Sort of an anorexic chupacabra

Anyhow, those with stock air filters might want to plug these holes for fording water
