ok guys got under the FJ last night and found the oval pull off cover on the skid plate.....pulled it off and directly up I see one bolt.....is that what I pull to drain oil?? others have said that they have pulled the wrond one before(transmission oil) but I dont see it.
If I am looking straight up with head faceing the rear of the FJ and legs towards the front end.....is the bolt directly in the center for the oil? and where is bolt for transmission oil.....anyone have a pic they can post thanks!!

That's it. If you go back about a 1.5 feet from oil plug you will see the transmission plug.
Transmission plug:
See the black pan and the silver plug?

Re: ok I think I found the oil drain bolt....I think
I'm not sure I quite understand your question in the previous post but the Oil Pan Drain Plug is the one directly above the oval cutout in the front skid plate. You can't go wrong. You don't want to touch anything on the transmission pan.

what the hell happened to that transmission pan!?!?!?!
Geez, no kidding ....
I think Toyota should have made the trans drain plug a hexhead or something a wee bit more difficult to remove. I'm surprised we don't have more FJ owners accidently draining their trans when doing an oil change
They made the same goof with the Prius. It has a CVT. When you're under the car, you notice two drain plugs. The regular looking bolt is actually the coolant drain for the inverter. Open up that and you have a very difficult situation
If you then try to drive the car with the inverter coolant low, you cook the inverter and face a $2,000 repair bill. If you try to refill it yourself, the bleeding procedure is complex and almost impossible without special equipment. Again, the risk of cooking the inverter
The cvt uses Type WS, same as the auto trans in most new Toyotas. The drain plug is a hex. Why not make the coolant drain plug a hex? If a Prius owner doesn't ask - or doesn't have the shop manual - they end up making an expensive mistake.

"I'm surprised we don't have more FJ owners accidently draining their trans when doing an oil change"
I have read of a few people doing that on their first oil change. The oil change experience is greatly improved over my old Tacoma. With the Taco the oil drain would splash oil up on the skid plate which would leak out in various spots later and the filter was a giant pain in the @ss. The wide hole for the FJ drain and the super easy filter changes make for quick drip free oil changes.
Re: ok I think I found the oil drain bolt....I think
The first time venturing under the FJ and trying to find the oil pan drain plug was a bit confusing, but I have the repair manuals and looked it up just to be sure. Now, it is obvious that the oil pan is under the engine and the transmission pan is under the transmission. Duh. That freakn tranny must be six feet long including the bell housing and transfer case! I would have been pissed if I had drained the tranny by mistake. Not that I haven't make similar mistakes in the past.
